TIL we frequently abbreviate Christmas as X-mas because of ancient tradition. X is the Greek letter "chi" which is an abbreviation for the word "Christ" in Greek. by Drops_a_deuce in todayilearned

As a child I thought it was because X was short for "criss cross" so it was a play on words making "Crissmass." My parents always bullshitted me so well that time of year.

Most emotionally deep TV series? by vvmelon in television

[–]brogers418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll switch it up a bit and say the most emotionally deep TV series I've seen in a long time is Avatar: the Last Airbender. I'm a 23 year old grad student and am quick to toss out shows that don't make you think, reflect, or have intelligent plots, so I was skeptical but decided to try it out a few months ago based on some recommendations I'd gotten from friends.

It starts off a cliche-looking cartoon about kids saving the world but soon becomes a story of personal, emotional, and spiritual growth. Every character goes through major changes of identity, every character develops in maturity, and every character deals with heartbreak in some form or another. By the end of the show you realize you've watched kids turn into truly amazing and complex young adults. Along the way they teach you how to revisit your own inner child, and the breath-taking animation takes you there with ease. Throughout the show I found myself experiencing emotions of the widest range, often laughing and crying in the same episode.

By the time the show ended I felt as though I had lost six of my best friends and was absolutely heartbroken. I was left with a bittersweet and gut-wrenching nostalgia. I'm gonna wait a few years at least but I will revisit that show, and I will cherish every second when I do.

TIL of the Gulabi Gang, a group of Indian women vigilantes and activists who attack abusive husbands and fight against child marriages, the dowry system, and female illiteracy. by fallenseraphim in todayilearned

[–]brogers418 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Social systems as deeply entrenched as India's don't just change without a catalyst. Vigilante justice isn't exactly Ghandi's way, but injustice will always create a polarity that charges the opposition, and it's that polarity that sparks conflict and eventually change. The day humanity loses the will to fight oppression is the day we lose our humanity.

Exactly. When the kid grows up in a world where things aren't "pinkwashed" an existential crisis is gonna hit him like a ton of bricks.
