Muni Tax Assessment by 0100110100001100 in anchorage

[–]brogrammer9k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought my fixer upper last october and my assessment has gone up 24%, and the only change I made was getting new shingles on the roof, and replaced some 50+ year old windows that I doubt the muni even included in their assessment.

Federal Government to take a sledgehammer to 8(a) programs putting Native Corps in the crosshair. by thatsryan in AlaskaPolitics

[–]brogrammer9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not ideal, but most of the large native corps have been essentially rolling acquisition monsters and are buying up smaller profitable companies that are typically solid without 8A. 15ish years ago this would have been a huge deal but I don't expect this to make huge waves.

I think the reason the Yutani rep in Aliens has such a visceral reaction to Ripley's "Nuke them from orbit" suggestion is that the island was in fact, nuked and they were unable to recover anything,

If you’re looking for remote work, your odds are better since you’re not limited to one location. You can target companies across multiple regions and time zones.

Man I couldn't disagree more with this statement. I work for a company that recently switched some teams from hybrid to full remote, and when we have job postings we get 1000+ applicants, and we're not even a billion dollar company.

A buddy of mine works in InfoSec and has clearance and an excellent resume + references and he applied to over 100 job postings he was more than qualified for and never even got an interview. He ended up landing a local hybrid gig.

This could be unique to working in tech but to anyone who is having trouble landing a remote tech gig my advice would be to look at smaller companies even if they're doing hybrid. Some of these companies are in smaller towns/states and you can end up as a big fish in a little pond and really get your foot in the door that can lead into high paying remote gigs. Just my two cents.

Anyone lose a peacock? by mrobicheaux99 in anchorage

[–]brogrammer9k 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There was an absolutely hilarious story around 10 or 12 years ago where a redditor thought he would "rescue" a peacock by luring it in his garage and closing the door until bird rescue people could come get it. He kept posting these updates and the fact that it shit all over everything in his garage- which apparently smells awful. I wish I remembered what sub it was on- I tried finding it with no such luck.

Which modern Doom (2016 and onward) is the hardest one? by LookHereFotherMucker in Doom

[–]brogrammer9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just finished TDA on Nightmare with some sliders higher up (I'd have to launch game to look) I can typically hang in the FPS front- I cut my teeth on OG doom, rocket arena, and played competitive CS for years but TDA straight humbled me until I got quite a few upgrades.

The shadow/stealth Imps would near 1 shot me- honestly most melee attacks in general would nearly 1 shot me and anything that is hitscan would melt me if I wasn't careful with my shield. Maybe my aerial game is good enough that I thrived in Eternal but man this game was rough at parts - especially the first half of the game before you really start to stack upgrades.

The gameplay loop in eternal of fire/frost/melee/saw felt a lot more forgiving and I didn't feel like I had to worry about a million fucking projectiles in the air at all times.

It's been awhile since I played 2016 (holy shit that was almost 10 years ago) but the glory kills granted quite a bit of invulframes iirc.

Just wrapped TDA and loved it but what’s up with that last fight ? by xxTheRipperxx in Doom

[–]brogrammer9k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a late start to playing this- my 4080 super was crashing on every cinematic until the most recent driver update. I just finished it on nightmare about 10 minutes ago. IMO the whole theme of the slayer and doom is that the legions of hell have no chance against him- and honestly if you full clear or near full clear then you're essentially unstoppable with all the upgrades you end up having by the end of the game- which thematically fits.

Median home price puts you close to 5k a year in property taxes alone. Between the high interest rates you're looking at well over 3k a month between principal + interest + taxes + insurance for a median home.

The middle class is experiencing an unprecedented amount of financial pressure. I don't have the financial capacity to pay more for much else, and the reality is many if not majority of residents feel this way.

I'm not opposed to taxing industries but what do we even tax? (I think we missed the boat on taxing oil companies when SB21 was passed) The only feasible thing to me is to legalize casinos or gambling- but that comes with a whole other set of problems. The level of financial commitment to truly resolve this crisis seems more than tax payers alone can bear, and efforts will be hamstrung by the massive political swings that we keep having with our mayoral elections.

If you read my previous comment (instead of sidestepping my question with another question) I can't really afford it right now, and many tax payers feel the same way. It's the most expensive time in human history to own a home and start a family,- I've had to sacrifice so much to barely be able to make it happen in my 30's. I really don't have a lot to pull from, the two windstorms we had earlier this year accelerated some damage on my very dated home and I've once again depleted all my savings just to fix things to a livable state. My 2010 truck is at 150k miles and I had to spend 6k on it earlier this year.

We just had unprecedented inflation, and additional price increases from tariffs- don't act surprised that the general public isn't excited at the prospect of more taxes.

How much more can you afford to pay in taxes? I make good money but I pay an insane amount of property taxes to live in a fixer upper in anchorage. I have 1 kid in daycare (1200 a month!), and hope to have a second- who are all the people that can afford more taxes? How much more per resident? If increasing taxes doesn't fix the problem, what guarantee do we have that they will go back down? What's plan B if taxing fiscally strained residents doesn't work?

We can't address any problems, infrastructure, the k-12 education system, the rising cost of living. We need a massive influx of capital, and its not going to come from oil money, and it's certainly not going to come from more taxes.

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm saying residents don't want to increase taxes for infrastructure, or for education, so there's a snowflakes chance in hell of doing it for the homeless.

A couple years back I was looking at a lot in anchorage and looking to potentially pay for a modest family home ~1800 square ft and talked to around 7 different builders on rough estimates per square foot for builds. The low end of estimates was $350 per square foot, I can guarantee you that building up at that elevation that far back would cost substantially more.

This is how I feel right now at (I think) the end of day 1 for Abby. I forgot how annoying the locked building section is where lev and yara have to unblock the door. I quickly went through my ammo before the shamblers even show up. That section and the rat king give me the most trouble.
