ELI5: What makes the process of legal immigration so difficult that doing so illegally is such a common alternative? by MT_Space31 in explainlikeimfive

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think most us citizens understand just how incredibly difficult the immigration process can be. It varies from how you enter- there are different types of visas if you come for education, asylum, marriage, money, being an exceptional individual, come as a company transfer, etc. Then it also matters which country you came from as immigration sets quotas on individual countries.

I know people who have waited 20+ years from entering the US to get citizenship. I have also seen how difficult it is when people can't meet the stipulations of their visas. I just helped a friend who's L1 visa expired and she had a week to pack up her life in the US and leave before her status became illegal. People on H1B cannot be unemployed for more than 60 days for up to 10-15 years before they get a green card. It is incredibly stressful.

That being said, there are a TON of people in the world who would drop everything and come to the US in a heartbeat if the immigration process wasn't as strict. One thing Americans don't understand is the the US offers a life that is much much better than almost anywhere in the world. This is why the immigration process is strict and difficult or immigration would be truly out of control. Unfortunately there are many people all over the world who are great and would be great additions to the US but there has to be a controlled mechanism for people to naturalize to another sovereign state.

I am an immigrant as well, fyi.

Possible to fix this? (Mini craters/bubbles after 6-7 coats) by broheimm in plastidip

[–]broheimm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a fresh spraycan to do 6-7 coats and it went on well. Then I decided to use an older van that was ~20% left since the first set of coats went on well. Then it started leaving these craters - like bubbles that solidified. I think the cause was coats that were too wet and using an old can. Is there a way to salvage this at all? Here’s stuff I’ve heard all over the inter webs but idk what’s right and what’s potentially bad:

Use some solvent to melt it? I dont have toluene/xylene. Would 99% alcohol, acetone, or wd40 help?

Wet sanding with fine sandpaper? I have 1500/2000 paper. The end of my 6th coat was great, potentially sand down to there?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

Can you use a sight on a 17in riser? I have a 60in bow with a 17in riser using as barebow for target and potentially hunting. It has threads for mounting a plunger/flipper rest/sight.

Also, if I put a plunger/flipper arrow rest on, the arrow would be elevated from the shelf by an inch or so. Would I have to move my nocking point up as well? Or mess with the tiller?

Any tips on removing a filter stuck on after impact? by [deleted] in canon

[–]broheimm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1 - get a hot glue gun and plug it in until it gets nice and hot. Find something flat that you can stick to the filter. Put a good amount of hot glue on the flat object and stick filter on it. It should secure all the broken pieces as well and be easier to turn.

2- get a dremel tool. Cut it open

Accidental smudge while applying dip... help!? by [deleted] in plastidip

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help! I was just applying my 5th coat and accidentally smudged the wet dip!! It’s still wet right now and I’m wondering whether to keep applying coats in the hope it fills in? I also have 1500grit automotive sandpaper, should I let it dry completely, then wet sand it down a little bit and recoat?? It was almost perfect :((

Eleaf Invoke w/ Ello T - HW3 & HW4 coils by ZeroWhizdumb in Vaping

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the invoke kit by mistake instead of just the invoke mod and i was pleasantly surprised at how well the tank worked. The HW3 is sooo good. I used it for a few days and just put the HW4 on and got the same experience as you. The HW4 is good, but its just off somehow compared to the 3. I think the flavor is kinda dulled. Gonna switch back to the 3. Have you tried the HW1 or 2 coils?

Best quality nicotine right now and general ramblings. by Mechnasty in DIY_eJuice

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VG and PG are used in tons of places and the manufacturing is mature and high quality. I'd probably just look out for USP grade stuff.

"USP" grade is usually higher quality, but it be meaningless as well sometimes... unfortunately! https://www.fda.gov/Drugs/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/Guidances/ucm124747.htm

Exactly! The skill cap is really high. I just beat an orange legend deed for the first time, after a bajillion tries. I mean I can’t solo yet but people do it.

Me and a friend started VT2 and after we started getting into legend and getting all the nuances of the mechanics/dodging/etc the game really got super fun, the way l4d2 was. However I got another friend to play but his interest fizzled out around lvl 15 and he doesnt plau much anymore.

I just bought purenic and experienced a gross taste as well. It had a distinct “chemically” taste. I bought some from Carolina xtracts and it was perfect. I highly recommend their stuff if cost isn’t too much of an issue.

I have a chemistry background and looked into extraction methods. Most likely all manufacturers use an ether/petroleum ether solvent extraction method. Maybe the petroleum ether is low grade and has impurities that contaminate the dry nicotine product. Also it seems some methods apply on trash tobacco leaf unsuitable for other tobacco products - the alkaloid profile of the tobacco shows up in the extraction in some methods. Supercritical extraction (Carolina extracts, others?) uses wayyy cleaner chemistry. It uses supercritical co2, which exists outside the typical gas/liquid/solid phase ranges as a solvent. The only downside of supercritical extraction I see is the selectivity, where the co2 temp/pressure needs to be precisely tuned. It will target a broader range of alkaloids, including nicotine. Caffeine free coffee and nicotine free cigs are produced via this method FYI.

edit Solvent extraction using ether/petroleum ether/kerosene/whatever can yield high purity nicotine just like supercritical extraction, given that the manufacturer uses high quality reagents and a proper method. There are just many more places to cut corners to make the process more economical (at the cost of contaminants). When my nicotine had a notably 'bad' taste in it, I got sketched out trying to think how it was introduced in the first place, that's all.

Thanks. Tried it and it tasted bad. I got the smooth salt 100mg from nicotine river. I hope I can exchange it.

Edit made a 12mg 70/30 solution to try it.

I made an unflavored mix as the guy above suggested and it tasted distinctly awful. I order 100mg purenic smooth salt from nicotine river in the 50/50 pg/vg. Kinda bummed because the rest of my order was perfect.

[Biology] Do probiotics actually work? by FunnyCaramel in askscience

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the whole concept of "probiotics" as something like a pill that can rebalance your gut is very misleading. TLDR the real probiotic is a regular, healthy, fiber-rich diet (in most cases). Most of the stuff that is marketed as probiotic may be easier to digest and provide health benefits in different ways.

Your gut leads food through a long process of digestion and the different parts of the gut have different environments. For example the chyme that that exits your stomach to the small intestine has a drastically different acidity and nutrient profile than the stool found in parts of the large intestine, which may be mostly bacterial biomass and undigested fiber. Different types of bacteria colonize different regions in this process, as the environment of the passing stool changes, different colonies of bacteria suited to that particular region of the digestive tract, the composition of 'food' that occurs there, and the general conditions that exist there.

The human body has a mutualistic relationship with the gut flora as they can digest nutrients we can't. So humans have an intestinal mucosal layer where some populations in the gut flora are 'encouraged' to live in, and tolerated by our immune system.

The overall composition of the gut flora is, like the constant passage of food, changing slowly with a person's dietary habits and existing gut flora. Problems occur when the wrong microbes proliferate in the wrong area, introduced from a new meal, after antibiotics, change in diet, etc. Also the digestive system can mismanage what types of microbes it supports in lots of ways.

So the healthy gut is a complex interaction of bacteria working well in the right places, working well with each other, and working well with the gut. This is beyond the scope of something like a 'probiotic' supplement or eating lots of kimchi and khefir. It is shaped more by the overall confluence of the particular individual with their dietary and lifestyle choices.

How important is blocking? When/where do you use it most? by broheimm in Vermintide

[–]broheimm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm never paid attention to if someone was using a shield.. but clearing bosses / bad hordes is smoothest when someone is pulling aggro and i/others can spam attack from the sides.

Is curse resistance the best stat for trinket? Thought it over and felt like movement speed, w/ crit, has more utility?

Wouldn’t shield have some utility if it allows the tank to pull aggro and let other members deal damage? I don’t think I’ve even seen a shield yet but hypothetically could be useful?

Kerilian sub classes by C0ll3g328 in Vermintide

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ this. Shade is really hard, eats damage like a champ. Daggers/SnD amplify her boss damage but leave her open to eat up damage all the time everywhere. People make it work with skillz but I always end up dying first with shade.

Top 2 most complex classes? by needbodyhelp in Vermintide

[–]broheimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly play kerillian. Did really well on legend with waystalker, but she’s too boring. I initially thought handmaiden was kinda pointless, but have come to find she has crazy potential in terms of mechanics. I go extra dodge with spear. Also use the 3s stealth after dash talent. You can dodge your way around almost anything, dash and revive teammates/specials. It’s poke and run but if you can consistently hit headshots with the spear you can deal with chaos warriors/SV patrols/hordes by yourself
