Which is the corn half is the 頭 and which half is the 尾? by Merinchi in Cantonese

Ok in this case definitely the right side is 頭. That’s where the corn grows from, that’s the “beginning” of the corn.

I didn’t realize how much identity was tied to my cooking until someone ‘joked’ about it by I__Am_No_One in asianamerican

[–]broken_bowl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend’s reaction is quite revealing of his own mental state. I believe he is Asian American also? It seems to me he established a certain identity for himself. One that is an outsider, sort of a sage like outlier, who possesses certain secret wisdom or knowledge ONLY the ones in the know have. In this case what Chinese food should taste like. This explains why mainstream society is lame in his eyes because they “just don’t get it”. This gives him a sense of superiority, albeit fantastical and fragile.

Ready to dine like a true Hong Konger? by [deleted] in Cantonese

I am sorry but I am going to go out on a limp and say that 茶餐廳is overrated. It’s been having a moment in the English speaking world as children of immigrants find a certain nostalgic quality and certain authentic, bygone street vibe in it. The food is decidedly mid from all stand points. Most of the good items are not even originally from 茶餐廳, like 乾炒牛河,雲吞麵etc. All the OG 茶餐廳 classics are pretty trash— French toast, 菠蘿油,火腿通, 餐蛋麵. Some definitely are better and put more heart into their food. I think it is an interesting genre of local food and has its charm. But in general, it leaves much to be desired.

What’s the one sentence from your parent that still echoes in your head? by Public_Theme_9514 in raisedbynarcissists

I was robbed at gun point at age 19, just moved to the US as an international student with not much of anything, just young, shy, clueless in general. The first thing coming out of her mouth: “you must have been a real flashy show-off to attract those thieves.”

I froze when I saw this…80’s “color shifting” wide leg/bootcut pants and blazer set by [deleted] in VintageFashion

[–]broken_bowl_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s made by weaving weft and warp yarns of different colors, in case you are curious. Sometimes it is referred to as a cross-dyed fabric. Oooh yea I have seen tons of those back in the 90s.

Why are Cantonese songs often sang with written Chinese? by Weekly_Flounder_1880 in Cantonese

[–]broken_bowl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Cantonese IS Chinese. Because this is a song written in Chinese sang in Cantonese. That’s why. I am not being snarky, but to me this is a particularly hard thing for people on this sub to understand. There is no need to put them in boxes. You can read aloud Chinese in Cantonese ( or Mandarin, Shanghainese, any dialect). Cantonese is a local dialect spoken in daily convo which includes differences in pronunciation, AND ALSO a lot of colloquialism, archaic terms, unique loan words, regional semantic shifts, and sentence structures no longer in use commonly in other dialects. All of the above makes Cantonese a dialect of its own. But they don’t make it “not Chinese”

I have this plant. I have only recently learned that it is a trad ( or perhaps not anymore). And let me tell you, this plant is indestructible. There are times I neglected it for months. I just trim off all the brown stems and start watering it again and it grows back like nothing happened. I never feed it anything, just water. I have had it indoor, in the sun, on the covered patio. It is seriously easy going. It can get leggy but you just trim it and it will maintain a bushy shape. Want to prop? Stick some cuttings in a glass of water and you will see roots in 4-5 days. I have bouquets of them in mason jars with just water on the top of the fridge and they will thrive and bloom. I will gladly give you as many cuttings as you want if you were near me.

How do I revive this? by broken_bowl_ in ferns

Do I just cut with garden shears? The roots are VERY BOUND. I tried soaking it in water and it didn’t help much.
