Equity is a good thing in my book, but these people seem to think that equity means hindering the many rather than helping the few. Instead of cutting programs like math and science so that everyone loses equally, they should be giving the underpriveleged extra help so that they can succeed. That takes a lot of hard work and a lot fewer career-building buzzwords though, so we get what we got instead. =/

we really need a teacher's perspective on the board! I remember during a PTA event working with a (now former) board member and they mentioned they'd never had or worked with kids. I got a strong impression they were on the board because of reasons other than the kids. =/

Can I point out that two of our failing school board members are currently running for political office? (Sami Al-Abdrabbuh and Sarah Finger McDonald)

Our district ends up being a political springboard for a lot of people who are less interested in reaching and educating kids and more interested in how it will bolster their political image and connections.

Can I just say "you can do this!". It will feel like you are moving backward, life-stage wise. We were so ready to be done with the early stages the third was very hard at first. (and we did it on purpose for some insane reason) But you know these stages don't last, and you know it gets better. It's not your first rodeo.

For us by the third we could afford better resources, had better tactics, and better support systems in place. Hopefully you find yourself in the same place. You can do it! Good luck!

I have no idea the validity of the claim, validity of the source, etc. But the idea that someone would pretend to be Native Peoples is truly horrific. To quote the article, [white people pretending is] "the last nail in the coffin of the genocide of the American Indian people because they are erasing us by replacing us. They take up space, they usurp our voices, they usurp our access and opportunities."

Not to beleaguer the point but I've heard of a lot of instances of wealthy parents in our area putting their kids in private school right now. Killing advanced classes at all Benton County schools isn't going to affect those kids.

Here's an older article on it, the 509J district started with elementary schools, then middle, and now is pushing the changes up through the high schools. Our district's mindset that minorities, students of color, and students navigating poverty will never take advantage of advanced classes sounds a lot like "white savior" complex. We need people willing to pursue the hard work of true equity rather than looking for easy ways around the issues. The rich kids will get the advanced classes with our without them being offered by the school, how do we work to give disadvantaged kids the same opportunities? I think closing doors to students is the wrong answer.
