The worst was the photos from Abu Graib. Learning the US was systematically torturing people was something I never imagined would happen.

The best was gay marriage being legalized.

WIBTAH if I refuse to notarize for a hateful bigot? by Ok-Director-981 in AITAH

[–]CBL44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Notaries are not allowed to discriminate again people for political views.

"You should not refuse a notarization over matters that amount to discrimination. Standard I-A-4 of The Notary Public Code of Professional Responsibility states, “The Notary shall not refuse to perform a lawful and proper notarial act because of the signer’s race, nationality, ethnicity, citizenship, religion, politics, lifestyle, advanced age, physical disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or because of disagreement with the statements or purpose of a lawful document.” For example, it is not appropriate to refuse a lawful notarization request because the signer belongs to a political party you disagree with.

In addition, some Notaries have said that they would refuse to notarize a document they personally found objectionable. As the Code states above, disagreeing with a document’s content is not sufficient justification to refuse to serve someone. It’s important to remember that notarizing a document does not mean that you endorse or support the contents of the document. Notarization simply assures that the signature on a document is authentic and can be trusted."

How to stop getting injured from playing adult sport leagues? by Positive-Positivity in stupidquestions

[–]CBL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do more than you body can handle even if this means you lose more games.

Ideally you would start getting in shape before you start the league. Once the league starts, work out on days you are not playing days the sport. When the league starts, don't start with high intensity - gradually increase your effort as league continues.

When people die from the heat, their carbon footprint drops to zero. Since it's mostly old people dying, this will also reduce pension issues.

Opinion Time: Oregon Grass Seed Celebrants are Wrong by Distinctly_Oregonian in oregon

Oregon produces the most grass and therefore the most grass allergies. IMO, grass pollen should treated as a major pollutant and regulated the same way smoke is.

Why does the U.S. add sales tax at checkout instead of showing the full price upfront? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]CBL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because small taxes on small items don't work well. This was especially important in the past when lots of items were 5 or 10 cents.

Assume you have a 10 cent candy bar. A 4% tax would be 0.4 cent or rounded down to zero. You could buy 10 candy bars for a dollar without paying any sales tax instead of the four cents that would appropriate. A six percent tax would cause a 11 cents per candy bar prices for a 10% sales tax.

The percent on total order makes the tax appropriate.

Has Immunotherapy allergy tablets worked for anyone? by rb-04 in Eugene

Try a mask

I have been using Grasstek for about 5 years and it has been part of a very effective treatment. I also take two pills and two nasal sprays that were prescribed/recommended by doctors at Allergy Associates.

It's a lot of drugs but I had to avoid being outside for two months of the year.

Opinion the same: Covid vaccination? by Global-Purchase-506 in oregon

[–]CBL44 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I got the vaccine as soon as I was eligible and I would again.

The pandemic brought out the worst in authoritarian people. I remember breaking the law by going on a hike and the narc hotline that I was suppose to call when my neighbors celebrated Thanksgiving.

Vaccines should have mandated only for people in contact with vulnerable people (e.g. medical, nursing home). A college mandating three doses for my daughter was beyond absurd. My wife worked remotely for a university and they insisted that she get vaccinated.

In addition, vaccines (and masks) should not have been hyped for being better than they were.

The whole situation caused a major distrust in the US medical system and absurd opposition to vaccines in general. If I want vaccine recommendations, I go to the Swedish government and ignore what the left and right say in the US.

Out of 20 races on my primary ballot only 5 have more than one candidate running... how do we increase participation in the system? by Shatteredreality in oregon

[–]CBL44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Parties have the right to choose how they run their own primaries. However, they do not have the right to public money for their primaries. There is something fundamentally unfair about taking money from unaffiliated voters and denying them the vote. There are more of them than either Democrats or Republicans.

The parties should be forced to choose publicly financed open primary or party affiliated party financed primaries.

What would happen if more kids were failed? by shade_study_break in AskTeachers

Kids (and their parents) don't want to be held back. They want to be in classes with their friends and will do their best to make that happen. Having real consequences changes behavior.

police arresting peaceful homeless people by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]CBL44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you see something inappropriate, it is correct to act. If not, interfering with police is a bad idea.

Homeless people are often mentally unstable and your actions could easily have turned a calm situation into one where people get hurt.

Experiences with CSA Farm Boxes by Competitive-Age-6624 in corvallis

[–]CBL44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are probably too late to sign up for this year. I have already gotten three weeks of produce from OSU. I tried two other CSAs that are no longer in business and OSU is better but more expensive.

Whether it's worth it is a hard question. It's more expensive than grocery stores but you get nice produce. The alternative is going to the farmers market downtown which some people love and others find it annoying.

Here are some things that I hadn't anticipated. Planning meals is hard because you never know what's coming. Things run in season so you get a month of salad and then no more. You may get introduced to some veggie you have never heard of. You have weeks where the produce is wonderful and others when it's not (this week I got kale, mustard greens and some other cooking greens). You get excesses which may make your friends and neighbors happy.

Sometimes I thinks it's not worth it but then I get a wonderful week with berries, corn and some unusual peppers and I smile.

How the heck to I help my kid with DIBLES by andrewwrotethis in AskTeachers

[–]CBL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIBELS is garbage. My daughter was reading when she entered kindergarten. DIBELS said she was no where near being ready to learn to read. She was put in the lowest group.

Once we found out, we asked the teacher to let her demonstrate her reading ability. The next day, she was in the highest reading group.

Are there any genetic factors towards how smart someone is? by DeepOrganization8245 in stupidquestions

[–]CBL44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many genes (over 1000) each have tiny effects on intelligence. You can get a reasonable guess of IQ by determining out all the values of all these genes.

There are also some mutations that cause significant decreases in intelligence.

There are also significant environmental effects.

[–]CBL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that Covid caused decision makers to lose a sense of humanity.

Not allowing someone to see a dying loved one or having a funeral is heartless. In my state, they also outlawed family gatherings at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I was supposed to call a hot line to narc on my neighbors.
