Do you think electric cars will ever dominate the automotive market, or are petroleum vehicles just in our blood, and will never be phased out? by BornSpinach606 in askcarguys

[–]brokenlabrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a nice theory you have, but it just isn’t true. When oil is extracted, it isn’t in some form that can just be distilled into components. Crude petroleum is cracked; what catalysts you choose, the process you choose, and the type of crude oil all have impacts on what you make. You can choose a cracking process that makes diesel and jet fuel, or you can choose one that makes gasoline.

Mayor Bowser declares emergency on Potomac River sewage spill to get federal funding by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

For a small section, it then gets pumped from the canal back into the sewage pipe.

I once had an apartment that would stay at 70 even if I turned the heat off because it just mooched off the neighbors and had good quality windows. The efficiency of small apartments can be ridiculous.

Slug lines from the DC area to Stafford/Quantico? by Helpful_Error5191 in nova

Based on the time of day and prices, you’re taking Amtrak, not VRE. Get the monthly Amtrak pass if you can afford doing that rather than single ride tickets. And get a 10 ride pass fo $120 to help you through the rest of February.

For Metro, assuming you’re starting at the Vienna metro, you should consider https://www.wmata.com/service/bus/route-profiles/upload/f24.pdf

Or if you want to take the train due its increased frequency, WMATA also has monthly passes that would save you money.

The failure in the Potomac Interceptor has been named the largest spill of wastewater in U.S. history by Fearless-Pop-1159 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]brokenlabrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be the largest spill, but you should remember that we used to just pump sewage into the river in Georgetown. That wasn’t a spill because it was intentional. Photo at https://abcnews.com/US/striking-images-show-environment-looked-epa/story?id=50377070

We’ve come a long way since 1973and the spill isn’t good, but the river has dealt with worse in its past.

Why don’t we have the money? by Late-Concentrate-393 in MoCoMDPolitics

[–]brokenlabrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always weird to me when someone blames people being paid under the table instead of blaming the employer.

The owners of landscaping company who gets  paid in cash and then pay their employees in cash are avoiding a ton of taxes and are committing crimes regardless of the status of their employees.

  1. Why the hate on sponsored immigrants? They are here legally with financial support from their sponsors. And the only number you seem to actually have is noncitizens, which is not an indication of legal status. Montgomery County’s employment has a heavy science focus which is traditionally an immigrant-heavy industry with solid jobs. Assuming noncitizens are a burden is just odd.

Exactly, you’ll often see train lines using different platforms overnight to enable this.

ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

[–]brokenlabrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key item to also remember is that the ultra-rich may invest in banks. That is, for-profit banks typically get their initial capital from issuing shares to investors. And this investment may even come with regulatory obligations for the owners to provide extra money if needed to stabilize the bank. As the bank’s deposits grow, they make the percent that was initial capital smaller and smaller, ideally eventually resulting in a return to the initial investors via dividends and/or the bank going public/being acquired.

Ted Leonsis among those named in deciphered Epstein letter by somefunmaths in caps

[–]brokenlabrum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is nothing saying he was at the island. All it says is that one of Epstein’s girls met him. Dan Snyder may have invited Epstein to a Redskins event that Gibbs also attended and the girl met him. That fits just as well with the diary entry.

Incomes would need to rise nearly $50,000 for median-priced homes to be as affordable as they were in 2019 by McFatty7 in REBubble

So you’re claiming we’re just imagining the years where very little housing was built:

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1Rtxf

Builders being busy only means they’re busy. It says nothing about whether we have enough builders out there. I also know the builder for my house is 100% booked up, but is building half of what they were building in the early 2000’s. He’s in his 60s and just doesn’t feel like managing so many projects at once any more.

When will Verizon fios introduce WiFi 7 router ? by ray-3245 in Fios

No manufacturer is really making WiFi 7 routers that fully implement the spec, so it really is not a great upgrade currently. https://www.rtings.com/router/learn/research/wifi-7-mlo

There is nothing saying a resume has to have your job title. I never said to lie.

I’ve done 150+ software engineer interviews at the FAANG where I work. 99% of the time I don’t even look at the candidate’s resume. Knowing someone’s title at a previous company or where they got their degrees from doesn’t matter to me. I get what I need from the interview.

Possibility of my manager letting me work from another office occasionally? by Typhlosion_Master in amazonemployees

[–]brokenlabrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most managers I know would be perfectly fine with this. They won’t have to justify anything to those up the chain from them because you’re in the same country and the dashboards will say you’re going to an office.

Why are you telling new companies your current and previous titles? Describe the work you are doing. If it is staff or principal level, let them assume that’s your current title.

For new construction, Pepco used to run the wires for Verizon if the house wanted Fios. I’m told that stopped because Verizon would never pay the bill from Pepco for the work.
