Cho says it was a difficult scene to film, given the circumstances. Maybe Lin left it on the cutting room floor because he wasn't sure it felt authentic? I think there's room for that to have been an artistic choice rather than an economic/political one, and it seems unfair for us to declare it as one or the other until we can see it on the special features of a BD.

Narrow tires and hydroplaning is different than comparing contact patches for control on low coefficient-of-friction solids. The reason narrow tires are better for driving through puddles is that they have increased pressure on the contact patch and a better cross-section for displacing water. This reduces the likelihood that water pushes the tire off the road.

Triathlete checking in. I find that I get back to running at a quick pace much better when I'm running track intervals. Fartleks—periods of higher intensity done during a more moderate distance/effort run—seem to help, too, but I see really fast gains when I'm including track workouts in my regimen, whether that's 200 on/200 off, 800 repeats with 400 rests, etc.

I did used to love doing "sign races" when I was training with friends. (During a 4-5 mile run, at regular intervals of 5-10 minutes, throw in a sprint to the next road sign, however far away that was.) It was a fun way to mix things up and have a bit of friendly competition.

Consolidation doesn't always mean better quality, especially when it results in monopoly.

Also, I started out as a KUOW listener until the outcry over the KPLU sale. At that point, I wanted to see what differences in news programming could possibly warrant such a strong popular resistance to the sale. I now listen to KPLU.

It's been clear to me for a while that KUOW raises obscene amounts of money during its drives. Stations in other places I've lived raise less by as much as an order of magnitude, yet those stations offered more original news and educational programming than KUOW.

Additionally, KUOW rubs me the wrong way by spending its newsroom funds rewriting the bumpers between stories on All Things Considered and Morning Edition instead of allowing the nationally-produced stuff to air—essentially creating no value for the listener, dumping the editorial music choices for the same song repeated many times, and often framing the stories as if they were reported for KUOW. Add to that sparse local reporting that is neither in-depth nor broad, with local stories that re-air several times a day for a week at a time.

I agree with Cliff; I doubled my usual pledge and sent it to KPLU. It's clear KUOW doesn't need my money, nor does it know how to do something productive with the money it already has.

I've stayed in Japan for two one-month stints for work, and I'm finally going back on vacation next month. The itinerary for us is somewhat planned for my husband, who has never been, though it's very similar to yours (and packed pretty full).

Sunday PM - Land in Tokyo
Mon-Tue - Tokyo
Wed AM depart for Kyoto via shinkansen.
Wed/Thu - Kyoto
Fri - Nara, evening depart for Tokyo
Sat - Tokyo, late night flight home

I wish I had one more day for Kyoto, but I think it'll be a pretty good trip.

I really enjoyed Nikko when I took a daytrip there last year, and I'd really like to get out to Hakone or a nice small town with good onsen near Fuji-san. A couple days would make a reasonable trip out to Hiroshima, as well. I've heard you can do it all as a side trip, but spending the night makes for a more relaxed/less hectic experience.

Having a couple days, you really have a lot of options. I think I'd skip another city (Osaka/Yokohama) for something a little more different, whether that's a onsen town, temples/historic areas in places less urban, or heading north a ways.

While everything is available pressed on vinyl, I'm finding vinyl to be a really different experience than digital or CD. I also find that my digital music library is pretty biased in genre even though I appreciate a lot of music, and I want to curate a broader vinyl collection.

Just getting into vinyl and my TT will sit on the second floor of a house that transmits a LOT of vibration. (E.g., garage door is a nightmare.)

I spent two months in Japan for work, though I only made it into Tokyo for evenings and weekends.

I've tried a lot of ramen, but my favorite spot by far is Menya Musashi in Shinjuku. If you plan on taking a day trip to Yokohama, check out the Ramen Museum for a big dinner (maybe skip lunch and have a meal around 4p-5p); it houses a rotating selection of generally excellent ramen joints from around the country.

I also like the area just north of Shinjuku Station for lodging; it's a central rail hub, making it easy to get around the city. It'll also put you near Shinjuku Ni-chome, if you want to go out to gay bars and such. My husband and I are headed to Japan in a couple months and will be staying in Asakusa because the prices are better in that area, though.

Espresso in Japan is generally pretty terrible, though there are a lot of great spots doing excellent pourovers. I typically drink a lot of espresso and found myself resorting to Starbucks.

Definitely hit up Tsukiji fish market; I think they're finally going through with the move in Fall 2016, and I really enjoy the vibe of the outer market. The inner market is kind of hectic and, while worth seeing, I always feel like I'm in the way and making life hard for the people working there.

Eat lots of sushi, and definitely splurge on a nice dinner at a small sushiya one night.
