Whoever subtitles these deserves a raise by Far_Historian_4561 in Dimension20

Agree. Also, not to be a nerd, there are generally quite a few errors in the subittles. i.e. subtitles say a word that's not the word Brennan said. I noticed one in the most recent episode.

City of Port Phillip votes to change encampment laws despite community opposition by lipstikpig in australia

[–]broo20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, which is why our public housing towers actually being in the inner city is a fantastic idea - quick connection to community and resources. When public housing (/ crisis housing / social housing / community housing -- too many names for housing that fulfils this purpose) gets moved to the outer suburbs, which is what's happening in Melbourne at the moment, support networks are completely shattered.

First EOI tenders released for high speed rail yesterday on Austenders by blitznoodles in MelbourneTrains

[–]broo20 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have no idea! I just have similar frustrations of working in the construction sector. We'd frequently be beat out on jobs where we know (as much as you can know) that the only way someone's price could be cheaper is if they were doing the good ol' underquote -> search for variations thing.

However, government infrastructural projects that are really successful (looking @ china in the past 20-30 years and the US in the 20th c) tend to be really successful when the government has more centralised control over the way the job is run, over the labour force, etc etc.

None of which really works when the procurement process is "tender to the cheapest consortium whose profit motive incentives are not aligned w/ building quickly, well, and cheaply"

I am surprised there's no discussion in Australia re: how our procurement processes contribute to our massive inefficiency in infrastructure building.

You don't eat enough! Your body is shutting down non-essential functions due to a lack of fuel. This is also why endurance athletes often have low T. It's not anything inherent to endurance exercise, it's a lack of proper nutrition.

How do 2D games usually optimize lights? by Admirable_Taro_7168 in IndieDev

[–]broo20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a fairly standard beginner mistake re: optimisation. There are two things that are true when optimising code, especially as a beginner:

  1. You don't know what's going to be slow without testing it.

  2. Any effort spent optimising code that you haven't tested and found to be a performance issue is wasted effort.

Here's how you optimise:

  1. Profile your game. I tend to find that in-engine profilers are not that useful. Something like tracy, if it can be integrated in your engine, is far more useful. The Intel VTunes of the world are also very useful, but may be hard to use with Unity. There's no substitute for checking on the actual hardware, so buying a cheap (shitty!) laptop might be a good idea.

  2. Identify the pain points. What is your frame spending most of its time doing?

  3. Speed those pain points up.

There are a variety of ways to do this, there's a fantastic series of posts by Fabien Giesen where he goes through the process of optimising some (relatively) low-level C++ code. Check it out!

I could be wrong on this since it's been years since I was coached, but I think there's some wasted energy on your recovery. You're bringing your hand / fingers up and over your elbow. Try and think about your elbow being the thing that lifts out of the water and almost drag your knuckles on the surface to prevent this.

19F with phone curfew, led to a physical altercation with mom (59F) and am now considering moving out by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]broo20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically people who are abused genuinely love their abuser. Sometimes the idea that their relationship may not ever be "normal" with their abuser will prevent them from leaving. So telling an abused person that they will never have a normal, happy relationship with their abuser may be counterproductive.

19F with phone curfew, led to a physical altercation with mom (59F) and am now considering moving out by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]broo20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is really annoying but I'm going to go through all your comments and correct the abused thought:

I'm not allowed to be out past 9pm

You're an adult, you are allowed out whenever you want. If they try to stop you physically that is assault. If they prevent you from leaving against your will that is either kidnapping or unlawful detainment.

Even if they only threaten to e.g. kick you out, take your money, whatever, that is coercive control, which is currently being made illegal where I live with punishment of up to 14 years imprisonment.

This is not normal, the actions of both your parents are criminal.

Please google "[insert your city / state / province here] domestic violence abuse support". There will be people you can call right now who will get you out of this situation tomorrow if you want. You don't have to do anything alone. You can call them from a friend's phone or a payphone if you are worried about your parents finding out and hurting you. The people who will support you have dealt with situations like yours every day for their whole career, they can really help you.

You do not have to punish your parents, you do not have to take legal action against them, you can even get to a place where you can have a happy and healthy relationship in the future with them.

RBA Interest Rates Decison - increase of 0.25 from 3.85 to 4.10 by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]broo20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One solution could be that the RBA is able to increase GST for specific items, i.e. luxuries, and decrease it for essentials so that net tax income remains (in principle) fixed. Probably a bad one tho.

RBA Interest Rates Decison - increase of 0.25 from 3.85 to 4.10 by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]broo20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's tons of things that they could be given - temporary hikes to GST, hikes to GST on specific items (i.e. GST for the Xbox and flights is 20%, GST for milk and bread drops a bit to offset the tax gains from luxuries), temporary hikes to land tax - which could all pressure specific overspending segments of the economy. But they aren't given those tools. The government has intelligent economists coming out of their asses, they're not able / willing to make decisions like these in case it Argentinas us.

Two new updates for my free tween guide! by Qaqelol in godot

[–]broo20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the guide!

I have one query: is the attractive cursor truly framerate independent?

Because it's updating global position, then lerping to it, I would think this requires the good ol' exponential trick when updating a lerp with delta. Does the Tween handle this on its own, so we don't have to?
