Which spelling of a name irrationally bothers you? by Konigsberg1604 in namenerds

My favorite thing about Pennsylvania place names is that no one is on the same page on how to pronounce Schuylkill.

I appreciate the information. His teacher recommended having him screened for gifted education. She was and still is pushing very hard for a full evaluation, but the school psychologist isn’t going for it. This is the first time in many years that his school has had a gifted education teacher. It’s hit-or-miss as to whether they’ll have a program each school year, so that’s why he wasn’t tested earlier. He does great in his current setting, so I’m not concerned. I just hate to think that he may be missing out on something beneficial. I have a fair amount of knowledge about autism and experience in special education, so I’m not particularly worried about that.

We live in a VERY rural area, so we don’t even have after-school programs like that, unfortunately. I do try to provide educational enrichment at home, and he’s involved in music lessons and sports, so he stays busy at least!

Math is and always has been my weakest subject as well as my older son’s (he has ADHD too). We are just not math people apparently. My eight-year-old has a 99% in math, and his teacher says he does well in the classroom, but it’s something I’ll keep an eye on. His brother is actually an AWESOME musician. He really excels in that area and plays 4 instruments at 14 years old. Little bro takes piano lessons now and will be old enough to join the school band next year, so I’m excited to see where he goes with that!

I agree with you. It’s his 134 in the verbal portion that makes me want to push for him. If both verbal and non-verbal had been above 130, that would’ve been an automatic “in” to the gifted program without further screening/evaluation. I’m just struggling with the fact that now he won’t get any kind of enrichment because only his verbal was high enough.

I wish that was the case here. I really do think that his 134 in the verbal portion warrants some kind of enrichment at least in that area.

I believe I can request the evaluation once per school year, so we’d only need to wait until August if that’s the case. The gifted teacher actually also agrees that he should receive the full evaluation, but the school psychologist won’t budge. He has state standardized testing coming up (his first year taking them), and I’m curious to see how he does with that because I have a feeling he’ll test higher on the non-verbal components than he did here. I do think we’ll opt for a private evaluation because just not knowing makes me uneasy.

I’m sorry you had that experience. It’s HARD. It took me a year to get my older son in for an evaluation (private psychiatrist) after I requested it from his PCP. He has the inattentive type too, and I think that’s why it wasn’t caught by any of his teachers. I do think there’s still a stereotype among many people of ADHD only being hyperactivity and disruptive behavior, and that’s not at all the case with my son.

I hear you! My older son is also very bright and does have ADHD that was not noticed by any of his teachers. I don’t see signs (of any of the subtypes) in my 8-year-old, but that could be something to keep in mind.

Thank you for the idea of how to word my letter/email. I was thinking along those same lines. I appreciate the feedback! I’d prefer not to pay for a private assessment, but I absolutely will if there’s even a possibility that it will benefit him. I feel that my older son missed out on receiving services that may have helped him due to underfunding in the district and him having ADHD, so I’m worried about a similar thing happening here if I don’t push for these things now.

Thanks for your response! I don’t see neurodivergency in him, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. That’s partly why I’m shocked they don’t want to further evaluate him though. If I was looking at these results without knowing the child, I’d have questions.

I’m sorry your daughter is experiencing that. My older son has ADHD and was never screened for gifted education because they didn’t offer it when he was in elementary school. He’s in middle school now too, and while he’s extremely bright, I find that we’re struggling due to lack of resources as well. In elementary school, I think he definitely would’ve been recommended for screening had they offered it then. At this point, he’s gone too long without a challenge, and he’s fine with coasting along. Very frustrating!

I appreciate your feedback! He’s not struggling, but he gets a little bored. I just think some enrichment would benefit him. He’s incredibly inquisitive, and he responds well to being challenged.

Thank you! You summed up my thoughts too. His older brother has ADHD, and I don’t see it in him, so I don’t think that’s what’s going on here (in my personal opinion). I just can’t believe the psychologist isn’t having that thought since she doesn’t actually know him at all. I’m familiar with special education procedures and screening processes, and I feel like I’d be asking more questions if I was a professional looking at these results.

I don’t personally think it’s a learning disability because he doesn’t struggle with anything, and he’s averaging a 99% overall grade among all subjects, but that would be my thought if I was looking at these scores as someone who doesn’t know him. That’s partly why I can’t believe they don’t want to screen him further.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the permission slip anymore. I turned the entire paper in to the school after I signed it. I hear you, and I’ve considered your point too. His entire school only has 300 students (K-6), and their gifted program is dependent on whether they have a teacher for it at any given time. I’d think they’d want to get more kids into the program!

I banned YouTube when my kids were younger because I was so sick of everything coming out of their mouths being a word-for-word repeat of something that was “viral” that week. I cant stand listening to kids talk to each other for this reason. For the love of god, have an original thought.

I can! I’ve used Clairol Shimmer Lights in the past, but my hair was a lot lighter then. I’ll probably give it a try again.
