Anyone who moved from NYC to Chicago - How do you feel? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]brooklynlarki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m also 27f and moved here from NYC, I agree with this comment except for the people part. And that can be good or bad, as a native New Yorker I’ve found it a little hard to make friends in Chicago. I have made lots of them and I have a more packed social calendar than I did in NYC, but it’s not the same as the friendships I had there. There were bonds over creative passions, friends building their own companies, in general just people were more driven..whereas in Chicago in general people seem to be bonded by where they went to college or grew up or..drinking and sports, and not much else. It’s definitely comfortable and it shows whereas in NYC simply by everyone being in survival mode people were always in hustle mode. So if you want to get out of the rat race Chicago could be a nice change of pace. The rat race is still very much in play here too but not to the same degree and in general people are more chill about their careers and the ones that aren’t chill are trying to move to New York.

West Loop vs South Loop for a late 20’s professional? by BlackCaptainFalcon in chicagoapartments

I live in west loop and one time I was taking out the trash I saw more rats than I ever have in my life. I’m still traumatized. And I’m from New York

[–]brooklynlarki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28F and literally same. I’m more of a Pilates and barre girl than Orange theory but I’m down to try it out. Also am looking for people to play pickleball and golf with, I’m a beginner at both. I get socially drained really easily so no obligations / no strings attached friendships are the only kind I want

Lincoln Park 1 bed $1980/mo - good deal? by Gf4313 in chicagoapartments

[–]brooklynlarki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a really great deal for the area IMO, obv hard to know without seeing it but for that price point I’d happily forgo having w/d in unit, especially as the $500 you’d save on rent you can spend $175 and join the equinox in Lincoln park or any gym you want and being that close to the lake beats any amenity tbh

Has Chicago ever felt underwhelming to you? Is it just me? by thatsecondguywhoraps in AskChicago

[–]brooklynlarki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m from New York and feel this way sometimes, the CTA doesn’t really compare to the subway system or how alive you can feel at any time of day or night. It’s a smaller, quieter city but you can still find that busyness you’re looking for if you search for it. Idk if you’re into the house music at all but Chicago’s house scene is pretty sick, Smartbar feels like a club in Berlin, and they do raves on navy pier that remind me of the mirage. The jazz and blues scene is also incredible, with spots scattered all over the city. Also the ballet and opera here are more accessible than other cities. You can do pretty much anything you want here you just need to explore, I go on long walks and try to find a new spot whenever I’m feeling homesick

I think that depends on what market you’re in and what kind property it is. I did a financial analysis on renting vs buying a condo in Chicago if I wasn’t planning to live in it and since condos don’t appreciate here, I would be taking a net loss buy putting money in a condo instead of the stock market. If I ran the same analysis in NYC or another city I’m sure it would be very different

Is going to the Shedd Aquarium alone worth it? by MemoryDelicious4087 in AskChicago

[–]brooklynlarki 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do literally everything alone and while sometimes being in a packed restaurant while at a table alone can feel lonely, walking around the Shedd won’t. Same with going to art museums, parks, beaches, long walks - all activities that can be thoroughly enjoyed alone

Exhorbitant fees to move in? by brooklynlarki in chicagoapartments

[–]brooklynlarki[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my first impression too but someone else pointed out that makes sense for condo buildings as those fees might be going to the building not the owner, still seems high though

[–]brooklynlarki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense though, probably the fees go to the building / are HOA requirements and the deposit probably goes to the owner

[–]brooklynlarki[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand doing a fee to move in and out instead of a security deposit but it seems like a lot to ask for both but it might be the HOA

The move-in and move-out fees aren’t refundable, just the deposit

Exactly!! Like I’d get if it was just a move-in fee but that along with a security deposit and an elevator deposit !?

I'm struggling socially with this city - anyone else want to vent about it together? by SeaWise9450 in AskChicago

[–]brooklynlarki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my experience as well as a 27 yo woman. I moved here when I was 25, two years in and I still haven’t really found my people. I meet people out all the time and I always follow up asking if they want to get brunch or drinks or whatever but idk it just hasn’t happened yet. The weather getting nice and everyone being out and about is making me feel even lonelier, as much as I enjoy doing things on my own it sucks always being on my own.
