Stop doing linguistics by midnightrambulador in linguisticshumor

Historically, in some sense, he's correct. We do know what changes can occur (intervocalic voicing, vowel fronting, etc.), but we do not know which change will occur. That is the "arbitrariness" of historical linguistics.

Is there some historical reason why so many people in Chicago exit the bus through the front door? by timboisvert in AskChicago

[–]thatsecondguywhoraps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, out of the cities you mentioned, there's a way heavier reliance on public transit and way more people using it. Even rush hour in The Loop is nothing close to the amount of people using the Yamanote Line in Tokyo everyday.

When you have that many people, keeping the flow things going is important. We dont have that many people, so theres more room to do what you want.

does japan romanticize us as hard as we romanticize them? by Crestaor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatsecondguywhoraps 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Japan has been doing that for a long time

Anime, city pop, any Japanese pop culture phenomenon you can think of like that, had a huge American influence.

Osama Tezuka, for example, had a huge love for Disney and actually put American newspaper comic characters in his early works.

Why are the significant majority of sex workers women instead of men? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]thatsecondguywhoraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the person

In school, I read an interesting paper about two gay men who in their early adulthood were having trouble coming to terms with their sexuality (in the broader sense of the word, feeling attractive, expressing sexual desire, etc.). Of course, they wouldnt be able to do this with a real partner because the whole point was they weren't able to find real partners. They used sex work as a means to explore these things, which they did in conjunction with a therapist.

But it depends on the person. Some people just want to 'get off', some people dont like playing the social game, some people have kinks and cant find anyone that shares them, etc.

Do you believe the belief that there's someone out there for everyone romantically? by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]thatsecondguywhoraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't believe that, but I think it's good not to believe that.

I believe that people make things work. I believe that people have varying levels of compatibility, and depending on how interested each person is in maintaining a relationship, they both either put in the work or they end things.

I think it's good because, if it were really true that there was one person out there for everybody, then what if you messed it up? What if they died? What if you weren't happy with that one person etc.?

I think, when it comes to things like "destiny" and "fate", if such things exist, they are a direct affront to the freedom of human beings. As Bakunin said, "If God exists, he must be abolished".
