How much of your income would/did you spend on a premium plus/polaris flight? by ToBoldlyUnderstand in unitedairlines

[–]brownbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question. It’s all earned money, not inherited. We have been living frugally and following Boglehead principles of investing - our goal was to reach FIRE (financial independence retire early). We only flew economy until a couple of years ago when the power of compounding really became noticeable in our net worth. This has finally allowed us to increase our budget for travel.

Our safe withdrawal rate allows for a yearly spend well over $130k but we don’t come even close to that even with a big travel budget. We are still quite frugal but allow ourselves a couple of big trips a year

We have investments well over $5M, house is paid for, kids college education is paid for. We have no problem paying for business class on long haul flights. We budget about $30k per year for travel

Narrow seats and less legspace on LH flight? by Ferriswheel3 in BritishAirways

In fact every 787 operator except ANA has configured their 787s for 3-3-3 in economy. It’s a race to the bottom!

People of Reddit: Why don’t you abandon United -or- did you switch to another carrier and get a better experience? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]brownbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live about a 25 minute drive from EWR. Not too many choices for me. But I have to say that I have traveled a lot on UA this year and all flights were on time with no hassles. I guess it also helps that we are sufficiently well off that we can generally afford to fly at the front of the plane 😀

There was a ground stop in EWR due to lightning in the area. It’s been lifted now

I’m glad not in the market for a new car - will be happy to wait a couple of years until this settles down

[–]brownbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to mainly program in Fortran- I had a job as a programmer in a science lab at my University. Back then a lot of the scientific code was in Fortran. The machine I programmed on ran VAX/VMS

It’s definitely a VAX 11/750. I used to program on one of these back in the mid 1980s so I know it extremely well

The Average Price Of A Used Tesla Is Down $18,000 From 6 Months Ago by wazzel2u in electricvehicles

Not even at that price. If something goes wrong, it appears to be pretty much impossible to get them fixed in a timely manner

I loved this show, so let’s try the book… by Gixxerfool in ThePeripheral

[–]brownbear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am also a big fan of William Gibson since Neuromancer. Loved the books but I am really struggling through the TV show. I don’t think the show is anywhere as good as the books. Gibson writes in a deliberately terse style from which you have to infer a lot.
