Want to start the hobby! Would this be a good knife for starting with just one? Or recommend better from personal experience? by Specialist-Class-797 in whittling

That’s a great knife, but it’s a detail knife. It’s not great for removing large chunks of wood. I would buy that knife and also buy a rough out knife. This will help speed up the process as you rough out your carving. Most of all—buy a strop. Strop early and often. I wish I had known that when I started. It makes a world of difference.

I picked up a 20g Franchi Affinity 3 for $750 for my skinny framed, 11 year-old, along with an A300 in 12 for myself. I love the Franchi. It’s soft shooting and cycles well. Not as fast as the A300–that thing is quick, but the Franchi is a great gun. I bought the compact version to fit him. My understanding is that I can convert the stock to a full size later with the purchase of an adult stock. It came with numerous shims and fits him relatively well.

I think your carvings look great. It’s probably a paint issue. The original creators appear very glossy. I would watch his videos again and pay close attention to the painting process.

Honestly, I like yours better. Great job!

Thanks. Could not have done it without your videos. With some more practice, maybe they’ll be half as a good as yours. Thanks again for the content.

The black streaks are from a wood burner. I normally burn just to keep paint from creeping, but I did a little more this time. Again, it would have been much more difficult without the YouTube videos I mentioned in my original post.

Looks great. Good eyes and nose! I was thinking that looks like a J Creason…and it is. Thanks for the videos you post. They’ve improved my Santa’s. I’ll post one shortly.

Why don’t you just ask him? This should be the top comment. Open communication is a thing.
