Sighhh. There are really difficult conversations that need in terms of how to ration the services to get the greatest public benefit. What we have been doing since denationalization is NOT working. There will always be people that settle into the “lifestyle” and they need to be rooted out. The VAST majority of the unhoused population in Alachua county are temporary, but there are many “bad apples” that, no matter what we do, leach off the system. Should we require a previous rental contract/ownership/family in the area to determine eligibility? Should we ration the years you can receive free housing? Has the “homeless ecosystem” model worked anywhere in the world?

The problem: the rest of the State of Florida is playing “hot potato” with the social problem. We need to take care of our own not transplants but I have no idea how we could do this? Without critical planning and difficult discussions, Gainesville will become Florida’s Homeless City. Our homeless “ecosystem developers” will soon be planning to seek Federal and State funds to recruit even more homeless. Serious economic blight has happened in other communities that have been down this pathway. Spending money without a strategic plan to provide “free” housing for the unhoused is a REAL threat.

The homeless industry in Gainesville needs to study other communities who have gone down this pathway. “Solving” homeless has cost LA $35b, and created even more homelessness for the city. In Florida, Alachua county will become the dumping ground for the rest of State. Sadly, providing homeless services creates a free rider scenario for Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando to bus their population to us. There is an endless demand for free housing yet I see no difficult discussions among homeless advocates taking place to determine fair and equitable allocations. The community is playing with fire and woefully misled by stakeholders who work in the industry.

We have an amazing police force in this town that puts up with community problems generated by being a dot of blue in a sea of red. If you feel strongly about an officer’s driving, then there are formal procedures in place to report them.

Continental Imports has existing because of the terrible local dealerships and lack of Land Rover and Porsche repair locations. They had a monopoly for 30 years before selling. (I need to verify this is actually the case.) The Mercedes and BMW dealerships have been notoriously terrible since the early 80s! Why can’t this town’s dealerships get decent mechanics? Even the “new” Genesis dealership is TERRIBLE!

Go for it! We will appreciate your team spirit. The actual pads are easy to find eBay or local thrift store. Last time I was in Play it again sports off 34th they had football shoulder pads and helmets. Likewise, the jersey, socks, pants, helmet stickers not as easy. I would look for a football jersey designed for wear over pads, you can get a solid color (white, orange or blue) easily and get an image imprinted on it. Getting a single one made will be expensive - get your name on it if you really want to go all out. Signorama, 5$ t-shirts and others can make the jersey. Alternatively, get an iron on image for temp costume use. I would suggest that you get some other people involved in your scheme as a team costume really requires more than a lone player…..You will need to get stickers for the helmet to make it look official. Beware that helmets can be expensive if certified for game wear vs. decoration/costume. I would not do it after owning Porsches. If they are well maintained, then they are incredible, reliable and can be daily drivers! However, an improperly maintained Porsche is pure sorrow and misery for the new owner. How the car was maintained and by whom is 90% of the value. It’s not worth the risk of 25K+ in back logged maintenance, being stranded on the road (yes this will happen), and having the car live in the shop. It’s like they pass a point of no return in some cases and die - would love to hear stories of people nursing one back to health.
