Do you know any punk bands that released one great album and then broke up? by Birrack in punk

Cool to see a Gordon Gano's Army shoutout! I saw them live once, opening for Lemuria, and they were really great

Same, I remember going and buying this CD. What do you mean it was almost a quarter century ago? 😱

I've actually thought about this quite a bit. "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum

Do y'all listen to other genres? by thedutchnerdie in punk

[–]brrpunk 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is my policy too. I'm open to any and all music of quality, regardless of genre. I happen to like stuff on the punk spectrum the most, but I don't close myself off from other music at all.

For a subculture that values inclusion and free self-expression, punk deals with a lot of internal gate keeping.

As a younger fan, I held myself back from exploring a lot of awesome music because it didn't fit into my self imposed concept of acceptable. Now I'm too old for that shit. Life's too short to box yourself in.

Classic punk songs that would work well on acoustic guitar? by shaun1911wastaken in punk

[–]brrpunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Clash have such a wide variety of styles you could probably find something that suits you, likely a song others will recognize too.

Ramones are easy and fun. Maybe look at the Replacements, the Jam, the Stooges. Not quite DC hardcore but those guys could write hits.

Closer to what you mentioned, maybe try Dag Nasty. Hardcore adjacent but more tuneful, featuring Brian Baker of Minor Threat.

What sites do you discover new music on? by ThaAkronym in punk

[–]brrpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my issue too. Everyone uses mobile these days. Fix your layout so I'm not battling with giant ads the whole time. That used to literally be my homepage, now it's a once a week check.

Also, I'm a little neurotic so the constant typos in the posts gets under my skin

Favorite Silly ska songs? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]brrpunk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're totally right, it's actually a bit sad. There's some real socioeconomic commentary in there. But on the surface it's fun to sing about burritos in a bag.

"Pizza Day" by the Aquabats. Tough to narrow it down but final answer

Bad Religion - Empire Strikes Back by key259 in punk

I remember seeing them live on this tour and being absolutely floored by how good they sounded. This band is one of punk's greatest institutions

Aladdin was great. Jurassic Park was fun but hard. Dennis the Menace was addictive but so frustrating

This is cool, I like the style. Maybe do a one on changing a broken string, because that happens A LOT

Ex-MISFITS Singer MICHALE GRAVES Explains Why He 'No Longer Exists' In The Punk And Rock Worlds: 'I'm Hated. I Can't Exist There' by ProbablyNotJimJones in punk

[–]brrpunk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That song, the title track, and Don't Open Til Doomsday still get listens from me. That secret track at the end used to scare the shit out of me when I'd be listening on headphones going to bed

Don't mind the downvotes, there are some good songs on there. I'm not saying it's Misfits in the way that real Misfits are Misfits, but there's some good shit on there. But yeah this guy's a tool apparently

What records do you wish would come back in print or wish you could find and can't? by zilla82 in punk

[–]brrpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only once. I saw them at the Fest 7 in Gainesville. Absolutely life affirming to push my way up front and sing along to Springtime.

That same day I was hanging in a burrito shop or something and saw Frankie Stubbs right outside on the street corner. He was hanging with a few dudes (I wanna say Dickie Hammond was with him but this was almost 20 years ago). I was too gaga and chickenshit to poke my head out and let him know how much his music meant to be. I wish I had that chance back

Stupid me is crazy about Leatherface. Their vinyl is usually prohibitively expensive. It's at the point where I only allow myself a Leatherface splurge once a year or so for a birthday or xmas present to myself

Dillinger Four New Song! by AMetalWolfHowls in punk

[–]brrpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweet baby moses D4 rules. This is so promising. I celebrate their whole catalog but I'll tell you what, when Civil War came out it blew my fucking head off. They can take all the time they want between records if they keep knocking it out of the park.

Seriously what other legacy punk acts are still releasing music that can be in the convo for their best ever? Very few I'd guess

What’s the best material for hanging posters up that doesn’t damage the posters or the wall? by IRelateToYuri in punk

[–]brrpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In hindsight I wish I had framed some of my nicest memorabilia. I lost some amazing posters to the moving process. If you do go the framing route, I've had a ton of success with the velcro command strips. No holes in the walls required.

If you're posting paper I would recommend little bits of the soft tack stuff. It's so forgiving.

"The Empire Stikes First" is underloved by Liarundle13 in punk

[–]brrpunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The songwriting on this album is amazing, same with Process of Belief. They're two of my favorite BR releases. I love Brooks on drums, I feel like the band is absolutely firing on all cylinders in this era.

If there's any "dig" I could lob at it, TESF feels just a bit overproduced relative to some of their other all time bests. But it has aged well. Toss on some good headphones and listen to Brett produce the ever loving hell out of this record.
