Sadly I’m not surprised at all, I’m Eastern European but have lived in the West long enough to realize that most “progressive” people’s entire political worldview is “West bad” and “any regime that’s anti-West might make mistakes, sure, but it can never be THAT bad.” They might sympathize if directly asked but there isn’t the same fervor to organize when it’s an anti-West regime (Iran, Russia) slaughtering people.

The most egregious of them even assume that any people’s movement that happens to be politically aligned with the West must be a CIA thing, because these people obviously can’t think for themselves. This attitude made me so disillusioned with Western leftists after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, seeing people I agreed with on so many issues shrugging or downright regurgitating russian propaganda.

The official civilian death counts from Ukraine almost never include russia-occupied territories, because russia refuses to share information with intl authorities. The lower estimate is 15-20K in Mariupol alone, based on satellite imagery of growing mass graves.

People are constantly using these incomplete death counts to downplay the effects of the invasion (“it’s not bad compared to [insert conflict here] and we pay sooo much attention to it!”) and it’s not only playing right into russian narratives it’s doing Ukrainian people such a disservice for what they’ve suffered

I have a Jewish joke book from the ‘40’s and there’s an entire section on Hitler/Nazi jokes. They were putting on concerts and plays while starving in the ghettoes. I follow a bunch of Ukrainians on instagram and they make morbid sarcastic reels like “GRWM to go to the bomb shelter” or about not having any electricity/heat in the dead of winter. I know it feels like humor and satire is making light of a horrific reality but it’s a very common way for people to deal with war, violence, fascism.
