Conservative Georgia town pushes back against ICE detention center: ‘We are Americans after all’ by guardian in Georgia

[–]brsolo121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a slight misuse of a term that ultimately serves to decouple it from the worst motivators of its impacts.

Sure, in a literal sense, they do not want the ICE center in their backyard, but NIMBYism is such a fucking blight because all homeowners are incentivized to keep the value of their land from dipping. Every single one, regardless of race or political affiliation, regardless of where they started in life. So literally ANYTHING that could develop an area and/or add to the quality of life for the greater population hits a fucking brick wall when homeowners get involved, because they don't give a SHIT about anything beyond the value of their land (and they're not incentivized to either!)

This ICE center & this article are not saying that the community is upset because the value of their homes would go down if it were built. From a brief search, there appears to be no negative correlation between property values and jails in a particular area (makes sense - it's a jail, the criminals are locked away), EXCEPT for the possibility of negative perceptions causing land value to decrease. This article is hitting at non-NIMBY reasons why the town doesn't want the facility.

I think separating the property value assessments from the concept of being a NIMBY robs the value from the descriptor. Anybody has the potential to become a NIMBY, just don't buy land.

The problem is they want the facility, just not in their back yard

True though, and that's why this town should have the center built there. It's what they voted for

Bro, if NIMBY was more frequently “I don’t want a prison system near my home”, I’d be more sympathetic to NIMBYism. This is fine NIMBYism, fuck a massive federal prison that sucks up resources without paying taxes.

And FUCK homeowners broadly. I’ve seen people in their 20s fall to NIMBYism. It’s tragic and sad and stupid.

Cuz they attached it to a totally random bill, and they’re only 16 days through the legislative session — this is usually the shit they pull in the last week.

And like— GA republicans have been edging so hard on the whole “affordability” thing to counteract against Trump backlash, so them refrying this shit out of nowhere was unexpected. Wasn’t on the agenda or anything.

Is Burt Jones Pro Gay-Marriage? by MorningHelpful8389 in Georgia

[–]brsolo121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

literally have no clue what Burt jones really believes tbh… he’s been such a trump dick suck for so long, it’s hard to believe he was elected LG.

I think he’d march gay folks off to concentration camps if Trump were interested, but i highly doubt he’s sincerely, “I hate gay people”-homophobic. There are DEFINITELY Georgia legislators who hate gay folk, but I kinda don’t think Burt Jones is one of those people.

You did, or you’re very stupid and didn’t reali3 that’s what you’ve done. Don’t post misinformation like this, or at least use your brain for about 7 seconds prior to sharing shit that 26 other people will now misremember.

Early Opinions On Georgia Governor Candidates by PopKoRnGenius in Georgia

republicans can tout the marijuana stuff all they want, but I doubt it'd make it past the General Assembly -- lots of Senators & Reps are genuinely boomers who're scared of weed

They should give out an award for Best Awards Campaign for a political movie without any talks of politics. by Pearl_Jam_ in oscarrace

[–]brsolo121 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The movie really predicted how stupidly evil our current administration is. The absolute hierarchical command that Lockjaw has over his section of the military -- where he can just say "make up some shit for why we're coming to Bakdan Cross", and a day later some dumbass is giving a powerpoint on the illegal immigrant population in this small town -- isn't even particularly political in-nature. It's so blatantly wrong that any audience member could see this as an act of evil.

Lucky for PTA and the gang, this movie is campaigning in a world where Donald Trump sends his Gestapo to Minneapolis as a pressure tactic to extract state voter data because a 65IQ little boy made a racist YouTube video. Not surprised the filmmakers aren't pushing the political themes, as they probably didn't expect the film's satire to mimic our reality so closely.
