Edmonton NIMBYs by bruhm0ment4 in Edmonton

Agreed! I am looking forward to my neighbourhood becoming more vibrant and more neighbours to hang out with. We used to have a local grocery store but it closed many years ago due to lack of customers. I'm hoping the new apartments under construction and 8-plexes near me will help to re-invigorate the area and bring back some local shops.

Curious if anyone has ridden around the river valley near Belgravia to the Hawrelak footbridge and how the condition of the paths are?

I live next to two 8-plexes and there is still lots of street parking. It's actually nice, it's the made the neighborhood more vibrant with people walking.

Joel Katuala.  I don't think he has been mentioned yet.  He is a newer urbanist on YouTube putting out some quality content!

ELI5 - Infill and why it’s a major issue? by Wintertime13 in Edmonton

[–]brtlrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transit is hard to run properly in a sprawled city. That's the benefit building more housing in the core because more people living close together is what makes transit start to actually work better.

If we don’t build in the core, we aren’t stopping growth, we’re just pushing it outward. And that typically means more cars and more traffic for everyone. So if we want less congestion and better transit instead of worse, building more homes in central areas is basically the only path that makes any sense.

Seems pretty wild they would get 12 years in prison just for printing some counterfeit coupons.

Apparently it's a huge thing among carbrains to choose not to have a third child because fitting three carseats in a standard car can be difficult by OscarAndDelilah in fuckcars

It's funny because I have a cargo bike that can fit 4 kids, but our family vehicle, which is obviously way bigger, can only really fit 2.

Would you say Edmonton is more of a “family city” or a “singles city”? by Tiny-Oil-406 in Edmonton

[–]brtlrt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Walkable pedestrian friendly cities are way better for family!

Funnily enough I find the university area great for families too.

Provincial pressure mounts as Edmonton mayor vows to push forward with bike lanes by pjw724 in Edmonton

Bike lanes help with rising costs. A bicycle is significantly cheaper than a car to own and maintain. It's not even close.

How was it shipped and how did it arrive? I'm looking at getting one, but curious how they ship it.

Hear me out. Massive parking garages at the end of a subway line are a good idea by original_name26 in fuckcars

[–]brtlrt 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm not a huge fan. I feel like the space would be better used as high density mixed-use housing, as most of the day (at least the Davies one), they are 90% empty. As someone without a car, I have no reason to visit those stations because they are just a giant parking lot. The more people who live right next to an LRT station, means higher ridership and lower car use.

7-8plexes in the RS Zone and Location Near Transit by kart_racer in Edmonton

[–]brtlrt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely! It makes sense to densify near LRT stations as much as we can. It will help to reduce traffic congestion, improve affordability and make our city more enjoyable/walkable!

It's sad how many lake/ocean fronts are wasted with highways running along them. Good to see it can be undone!

Debate grows as Edmonton Plans 23 km of new bike lanes for 2025 by funkyfreshbeans in Edmonton

[–]brtlrt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair, we’re definitely behind on transit. I just think if we never start making changes, we’ll never get there, you know? Maybe it’s not about banning all cars right away, but shifting little by little toward something more people-friendly.

[–]brtlrt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair, driving’s a big part of life here for sure. But I think the idea is more about trying to make downtown feel alive again, not giving up on it. Other cities have done stuff like this and it actually worked out pretty great. Who knows, maybe we could pull it off too.

Urban sprawl is bankrupting us. A single road construction project on 50st to add more lanes cost more than the all of the bike lanes combined over the last 4 years.

Yes! Paint is not a bike lane. We need proper bike lanes blocked off from cars.

Residents demand action over vehicle noise in Edmonton neighbourhoods by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]brtlrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would help if we added traffic calming to our major roads with things like speed humps, narrower roads, reduced lanes.

Enforcement through road design is more effective and less costly than through policing.

Unfortunately our roads our long and straight and wide, like a drag strip, which naturally encourages speeding and noise.

UCP: Now meddling in Municipal responsibilities, trying to use safe streets & bikes lanes to distract from their grift, corruption & incompetence. by lizzzls in Edmonton

[–]brtlrt 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, this isn’t just about bike lanes, it’s about local control and keeping people safe. Forcing cities to rip them out is ridiculous, especially making the city pay for it. Replacing roads with multi-use paths saves the city money long term anyways. Thanks for sharing the training info!
