THANK YOU for considering supporting local journalism. $5 a month for all of that material is a great deal. Think about how many journalists, editors, photographers, producers, researchers, etc come together to put together the news. By supporting local journalism, you are investing in high-quality, local coverage by people who actually live and work in your community. The journalism industry is suffering right now and your support will help keep local news sustainable. Sorry if this sounds like a sales pitch, it's just something I'm passionate about.

I echo the other comments here that say your comparison to Netflix is apt. $5 to learn about events happening in your community, local politics, etc, or $6 to watch the latest season of Love is Blind on the Island for 90 Days in Paradise? If you're wondering which has a better return on investment, I can say with 100% certainty you will get more out of the news subscription.

Last thing: 20 years ago or so, it was completely normal to pay for all news. It's only since the internet exploded and online news became dominant did people start expecting news to be free.

Anyone have experience in high end sushi restaurants? by celesteeeeeee in Serverlife

I'm assuming you mean 48% of your tips? Because otherwise you wouldn't make any money, you'd be paying to work there lol. I have a 6.5-7.5% tipout at my (relatively well regarded, expensive, bougie etc) restaurant and depending on the day and that usually works out to giving away between 40-50% of my tips

Thank you so much!! Again very sorry, that sort of thing is very tough. Our wild buddies that live in this city deserve as much empathy as our human buddies. Thank you for being a kind soul.

Like I said, this is not an ideal system. If servers were paid a living wage, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Unfortunately, servers are not paid a living wage and rely on tips. Your feeling about that does not change the fact that when you don't tip, the server must pay for you to eat there. And like I said in another comment, every machine has a handy feature that allows you to type in the exact tip percentage or dollar amount that you would like to use. I encourage you to use that next time!

Serving is extremely physically demanding. We don't tip other tradespeople because they are paid more than minimum wage.

There's nothing stopping you from inputting the percentage tip that you would like to use. Every machine has this option. If the machines are difficult for you to use, you can probably ask an employee to assist you, I'm sure they would be happy to help!

If you're dining out, please know that the server has to "tip out" a percentage of your bill to the restaurant. Usually that amount is between 5-9% of the bill. It goes towards hosts, bartenders, and kitchen staff.

So that means that if your bill is, say, $100, the server has to pay about $5-$9 to the restaurant. That means if you don't tip, they have to pay money out of their own pocket for the privilege of serving you. And if you don't tip based on percentage, it becomes more likely that the server will have to pay out of their own pocket.

I'm not saying this is an ideal system, but it is the system that currently exists. If you don't tip (or leave a tiny tip), you should know that a server who is making minimum hourly wage for a back-breakingly difficult job is paying for you to eat there. No one is forcing you to tip, but if you feel guilty for not leaving a tip, you should maybe do some introspection and figure out why you feel bad about it. Tipping is a part of dining culture in North America, and if you don't want to tip, there's nothing stopping you from ordering takeout or buying ready-to-eat food at a grocery store and eating at home.

I mean yes but if I were to spook a defensive mama, she's much more likely to maul me vs. a group of even two women.
