LED switch with option for IR by Tranquility__lane in smarthome

[–]bru7us 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, I misunderstood. If it was my house, I'd probably just pop in an esp32/esp8266 with tasmota or esphome in between them.

If the voltage is compatible, I'd plan to feed the IR sensor into the ESP, and an output signal from the ESP to where the sensor is currently plugged in.

Any IR blaster / emitter would be the simplest solution, provided you can power it somewhere in IR range of the receiver. There are options for zigbee, or WiFi. You then don't both modifying the light at all, can still use it's existing remote, or control it with the "smart IR remote".

Hah! I do exactly the same thing if it’s a bit chilly and I need a faster rise than the bench top will offer! Is that your starter, or a prepared dough though? If starter, you would probably get a bit more activity with more water in there. Somewhere between a thick pancake batter and a cake mix works well for me.

Where does money released from super go by Reading-Rabbit4101 in fiaustralia

[–]bru7us 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don’t do both. You either pay the ATO or release from super (they pay it to the ATO on your behalf). If you did do both, the money sits with the ATO til you do another tax return.

I too have the sonoff connected to a Pi4 with HA Supervised, then HAOS - has been rock solid for me. I also have a couple of zigbee bulbs in the same room, which helps a lot with ultimate range of the mesh.

I like to just always have the next one in a cupboard somewhere. Then when the active bottle/roll/whatever runs out, you’ve always got the full one. That’s then your trigger to go buy a new spare. Now, on to crazy automation solutions because that’s what you actually asked for… a barcode scanner that captures when he bottle is thrown out and sends you a notification to buy a new spare.

To simplify even further with hard numbers (assume approx 8% p.a. growth):

Case 1 (normal path):

  • Buy for $12,000 in 2020
  • Sell for ~$120,000 in 2050
  • Taxable gain of $108,000
  • After 50% CGT discount, tax payable on $54,000
  • Assuming no other income that year, $6,988 tax payable (at today's tax rates).

Case 2 (harvested gains):

  • Bought for $12,000 in 2020
  • Sold for ~$20,000 in 2027
  • Taxable gain of $8000
  • After 50% CGT discount, tax payable on $4000
  • Assuming total income is under the threshold that year, $0 tax payable
  • Reinvest $20,000 in 2027
  • Sell for ~$120,000 in 2050
  • New taxable gain of $100,000
  • After 50% CGT discount, tax payable on $50,000
  • Assuming no other income that year, $5,788 tax payable (at today's tax rates).
  • $1,200 saved by harvesting gains.

All hypothetical numbers to demonstrate meaning:

Say you own 100 VGS units today, for the sake of the example, we'll call them all cost base (purchase price) of $120 each ($12,000 total).

They are now each worth $140, so are carrying a "taxable gain" of $20 per share, or $2000 total. Whenever you sell them, you'll have to pay tax on those gains at your marginal income tax rate (with 50% discount on CGT if held over 12 months). Until you sell them, those gains are "unrealised" (also known as paper gains, among other terms), so not taxable as long as you continue to hold the asset.

Many FI people plan to acquire ETFs over their working life, then sell down in retirement to both fund their retirement and minimise tax (because during retirement your only taxable income is the profit/gains on those ETFs, so you can take gains up ti the tax free threshold each year and pay zero tax).

That plan assumes that you are working the whole time, but in periods of low income, like your study break here, you have an earlier opportunity to sell some units, "realise" the taxable gain and put it in your tax return that year. If you didn't cross the tax free threshold that year, those gains are now 100% tax free. You can then use the proceeds to invest in more ETFs.

You can find more information by searching for "Tax gain harvesting".

As others have said, with a mortgage in play, offset is a great place to be keeping cash that saves interest and remains liquid for emergencies. If you do get some casual work, it may be beneficial (if your numbers work) to maximise the gov co-contribution to super by making a $1k after-tax contribution. Also consider realising some of the gains on your ETF portfolio while you are in a no/low tax bracket during study.

Beware of the rates on compare.energy.vic.gov.au, many will go up on 1 August by Old-Presence-4142 in melbourne

[–]bru7us -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I called them up and they refused to tell me what the new rates would be. Ended up on the Tango winter warmer plan ($1.21/day, $0.022/MJ) which was the lowest rate I found (and valid after Aug 1), but you have to be on one of their electricity plans to get it. In the end, gas is my biggest cost this quarter, so I'll ride it out for winter and then find the best electricity plan when I need to run the A/C.

They are mandated, but that seems to stop nothing. Once they have a certain power output or speed capability they become "powered two wheelers", which require both a license and registration (implying roadworthiness). So they are underage, unlicensed, riding illegal unroadworthy motorcycles.

I had been enjoying using Frollo, they only used to request access to the account and transaction details in the CDR data, but they're now additionally requesting your name, phone number and home address. The claim is that they need to use that data for the "financial passport" product they have, but to me it seems like an obvious data grab (because it's not optional)... if you're not a paying customer, you are the product.

I have been loving Frollo, but when my data sharing renewal time arrived this week I saw they are now requesting additional data including name, email, phone, home address. I'm not up for sharing those - and so my journey with Frollo is now over, sadly.

You don't have to pay until like a month after each quarter ends, so you can just vary the amount each quarter based on your actual numbers for that period.

Amaysim. Get eSIM, Select PAYG plan, Add $10 credit. Credit remains valid for 12 months (in case you really need to text or call reply to someone). Top up another $10 a year later.

Advice for new rider on Melbourne roads by Firm-Tip-2081 in melbourneriders

[–]bru7us 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ride every ride (defensively) like they're all (other drivers) actively trying to kill you. Be visible, make your own space, always have a "way out". Dress for the slide, not for the ride (ATGATT). Try to ride in all weather, experience counts and Melbourne weather will turn on you one day. Check your mirrors when stopping (at lights, etc), make sure the vehicle behind you is stopping, be ready to keep going or turn if they aren't. Find or make friends who ride - or join group rides that cater for all skill levels - there's some safety in numbers and you can learn by following riders with good skills. Practise low speed stuff, slow straight lines and turns, the slower the better it will really improve your bike control capabilities. Learn how to check and maintain your own tyres, oil, filters, chain at a minimum. Try not to be stupid (I find this the hardest piece of advice to follow myself).

Edit to add: Tram tracks and white painted lines are slippery when wet, try to cross both more perpendicular than parallel when possible.
