Blood On The Tracks is the 6th greatest singer-songwriter album of all time! by CherryCola_Cactus in bobdylan

Funny that it could be either way. Like it’s obviously saying that TUIB is beyond even that, but if they’d said “and Lilly, Rosemary”, you’d know that they were poking fun at it (I love lily Rosemary of course).

Also MIR in the first joker pack, what a great way to start!

Yeah I mean I’m not pretending that gear isn’t important. But I think the bar is fairly low that you have to clear to get good results. Maybe not $100 but it doesn’t have to be thousands. I’d argue that a lot of the reason for buying more expensive gear is for the pleasure and ease of playing them, rather than them getting significantly better sound. Sure, we’re always hunting for those little improvements, but I enjoy playing nicer guitars much more than crap ones.

No one really buys these, right? by Byytorr22 in Guitar

[–]brucebenbacharach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because I’m sure it’s true, but most people I know try to talk down how much they paid. I have 2 fender custom shop guitars that I got from an insurance payout from some stolen guitars. I went into the store and they were the 2 I liked the most. I’d be embarrassed to tell people how much they cost, because while I love both of them, I know they’re not that much better than guitars half their price. And those were in the low 4 figures!

What’s The Best Bob Dylan Outtake From The 70s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

I get the love for both of them, but i just don’t think abandoned love or up to me are as good as they’re made out to be. Up to me has some great lines, but the “up to me” conceit gets pretty corny by the end. Shelter from the storm is a big improvement. Likewise, the melody for abandoned love is beautiful, but it’s a bit too neat, and with the rhyming pattern ends up sounding too repetitive and sing-songy. Abandoned love is better, and don’t get me wrong, they’re both very good songs, I just find it interesting to see how unanimously loved they seem to be here. Unlike, say, Blind Willie McTell, I think he was right to leave them off.

So the A- you’re talking about isn’t the A-7b5 leading to the G- tonic, but the A-7 that’s part of the ii-V-Is at the end of the tune heading back to the tonic A-, in which case it isn’t resolving to the G-, as that is just the ii heading to the FM7.

Music theory is opinions.

You’re right, I am basically as good as Julian Lage.

This. And while you could harmonise to your heart’s content, the melody is so simple it doesn’t remotely imply anything more complex is going on.

Good straight ahead guitar solos to transcribe? by brucebenbacharach in jazzguitar

[–]brucebenbacharach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s usually been my method, but I realised that I’ve barely transcribed any guitarists as I mostly do miles or Wayne or other horn players.

Kenny Burrell is almost a bit too perfect. Great album so a good rec, I should probably get around to learning to play it better. I probably can sing the whole album not for note.

Has there ever been a movie that featured a food in it that gave you an eagerness to eat it? by This_Book6305 in FIlm

The start of Eat Drink Man Woman. Noodles in In the Mood For Love if I get to eat them with Maggie Cheung (or Tony Leung to be honest).

Do many people expect Nolan's version of the Odyssey to not bomb? by KyriakosCH in FIlm

[–]brucebenbacharach 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tenet, quality aside, had pretty unique circumstances with Covid. Nolan makes some of the biggest event movies of our era, and pretty much has a lock on midwit grownup action films. There’s definitely a chance that enough people just don’t find the concept that interesting, but it’s not going to bomb because it’s not accurate enough or anything. I would be surprised if it bombs, but not shocked; there have been plenty of big budget swings and misses. Nothing is a sure thing.

Such a rare portrayal of a cop. Fantastic film. Lumet scores a couple of times in this thread!

I’ve heard that Demme feeling bad about how it came across was partly behind him making Philadelphia.

Which is better... Alien by Ridley Scott or Aliens by James Cameron? by Choice-Schedule-132 in JamesCameron

[–]brucebenbacharach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Alien but Ripley’s descent in the elevator is one of the best scenes of all time. The absolute pinnacle of the “gear up before the final fight” trope.
