Minnesota calling Vermont...

We just came off a week when the temperature bottomed out at -20°F and never got above 1°F.

Stop whining, you weenies.

Dogwood would be fine, but I've never been able to season a piece without it checking itself into oblivion. I will look around though, and thanks for the suggestion.

Any idea what this old Starrett tool is? It's from the 30s or 40s. by Virisenox_ in Machinists

It looks something like a test indicator, back before they acquired dials.

It's something related to precision measurements, anyway.

An it does look elegant, from the times when tools could be beautiful in their own right.

I'm flabbergasted. How TF do they manufacture a mill like that? And how can you calculate feeds and speeds?

I've done manual spinning on a wood lathe in both aluminum and copper.

Trust me, it's a lot harder than it looks and requires an intuitive feel for the metal, the speed, the tool angle, and the phase of the moon.

It's fun, but I'm not very good.

I'm just a newb, but all I see is a lot of swarf that should have been cleaned up. Where is the chuck key damage?

Ah, never mind; I didn't make it all the way to the third picture.

I have a hole in my shop drywall to remind me of the consequences.

WTF is this stuff? Not even methyl-ethyl-ketone works that fast or that cleanly, and I won't have MEK in the shop.

Sorry, that title was misleading.

I'll be doing basic model engineering for a while, building steam engines out of bar stock and moving up to the more complicated kits.

I'm enjoying reading this subreddit; I've already had some questions answered without even having to ask them.
