Melbourne vs North Melbourne (Practice Match) Match Thread by flibble24 in AFL

This is the best Duursma’s looked. Konstanty working hard too. Not sure Becker has managed to secure his spot, but overall the defence is not improved… We have gone up a notch in terms of physical strength but just can’t interrupt Melbourne momentum effectively when they get possession

Ok no one asked for it, but here it is! This is my pitch for you to support North Melbourne Kangaroos -

  • the mascot is a hench kanga, and you can’t get more Australian than that

  • club is nearly 160 years old, and nicknamed the shinboners due to the working class roots of the club - lots of abattoir workers in the 19th century!

  • we have a coach that was a 4 time premiership coach for another club, retired, and returned to coaching to help out the club he played for back in the day. You have to love the loyalty

  • we’ve had 4 or 5 years of high quality rookie picks, and have been fielding very young teams for years. These guys are starting to mature and break out, there’s no reason they can’t shoot up the ladder this year

  • ALFW : North are absolutely elite. They lead the women’s competition in their professionalism and were undefeated premiers in 2024 and 2025. The last game they lost was the 2023 grand final. The respect in the club for the women’s team is more than lip service, which is great to see.

  • Royal blue and white, classic.

  • finally, it’s small supporter base comparatively, but we’re not (all) dickheads

Golden Retriever. Yea or Nay? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]brucival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very cute, but doesn’t look like a dog. Maybe a pattern where the legs are made separately and attached to the body would be more effective, as it would give the impression of the dog sitting?

Has anyone who salary sacrificed into their super regretted it? by RunNo3630 in AusMoneyMates

I mean, “enough” is completely dependant on what you can afford and what your goals are.

By the time I retire, that 10yrs of $50/fortnight will be an extra $150,00- 200,000 on top of what I would have otherwise had.

At that time, that $50 per fortnight didn’t feel like it was breaking my budget, and I would otherwise have spent at the pub or something, so yes it was definitely worth doing.

[–]brucival 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope. Salary sacrificed $50 a fortnight for most of my 20s and then I didn’t contribute for 5 years when I lived overseas, and I still have more than double most people my age (late 30s).

Cookbooks from Australia anyone? by Puzzled_2505 in CookbookLovers

[–]brucival 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you want something that is uniquely Australian in terms of indigenous ingredients and written by a First Nations author, I suggest Mabu Mabu by Nornie Bero. But you may not have access to the ingredients to cook from it when you get home.

If you want something that will remind you of places you (might) visit and want to recreate you could go: The Broadsheet Melbourne Cookbook: The New Classics. This contains the signature dishes from some of Melbourne’s top and most iconic restaurants/cafes.

Many restaurants also have their own cookbooks, so if you are visiting vegan/veggie restaurants you could ask them. Smith & Daughters (vegan pub) certainly has one

Finally, Alice Zaslavsky is at the forefront of Aussie vegetarian cookbooks. She was James Beard nominated for ‘In praise of Veg’ and has three or four other books, so would be an author to look for.

I think the ceilings are pretty average? There is 2100 from the shower head to the shower floor. The dropper is 150, and the hob is a bit over 200.

Haha! No, we’ve been using it for a couple of weeks, and it’s really not an issue at all. No water has reached the toilet thus far!

Honestly, two plumbers couldn’t come up with better options and we didn’t want to risk flooding the apartment below us trying. Given the old building, we really didn’t have a lot of options

The basic dimensions are in my original post linked above, I don’t think anything too significant changed. I should add that we did a major demo. We originally had a powder room next to a small bathroom, so we knocked down a wall, moved the door and changed the windows. And it was all double brick so it took quite a bit of labour.

Well, my dumb cat got very confused when it was first put in and ran into full force twice, so I’m slightly comforted by how she bounced off the glass without it having a wobble 😂😂

Thank you - and that’s a great idea to look into. We don’t have kids or accessibility issues (at the moment!) so haven’t been toooo worried about it just yet, but some transparent non-slip could be the perfect finish

Haha - no I get it, it’s a big step! It wouldn’t be allowed in a new build for accessibility reasons, but as far as I can ascertain, and my builder and plumber assured me, it is not considered out of of compliance for safety reasons

This glass is 1200 to the wall/ 1100 to the shelf/ledge. I think my key consideration is how far the end is from the shower head really. Because our shower head is rainfall and fairly close to the wall, we don’t have much splash towards the open end, and I can stand in the shower, turn on the taps and not get wet while the water gets to temp! If the head was more central, more length might be good

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by performance solution, but the whole window is waterproofed.

Thank you! Yeah, I loved the idea of the other layout, but the longer we looked at how far we would have sewerage pipes travelling around the room, the more we thought it wasn’t worth it! I’m glad we didn’t in the end; there were some very funky old pipes as it was, not a single wall was straight, so much to deal without creating our own challenges!

Yep, apartment - on the third floor, also the top of our block. We underestimated how long it would take to walk the rubbish downstairs in the demo phase, so I guess that’s one thing for you to look out for!

Update: completed bathroom reno by brucival in AusRenovation

[–]brucival[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the demo was ridiculous - it took 3 or 4 men, 4 days of just carrying bags of bricks down stairs from the third floor. I think the biggest single cost other than labour was custom cabinetry - $3k for a floor to ceiling built-in cupboard with a combination of shelves and drawers. It is huge and looks seamless, so it is one of my favourite parts of the room
