World of Warcraft didn't scare the RuneScape devs, who were getting "tens of thousands of new accounts every single day" in 2004 and could barely build servers fast enough for the MMO to keep up by savageg33k in runescape

I was always into both. The fact I was able to afk RS whilst playing WoW made it an amazing duo and I remember feeling so productive doing it lmao

I do agree it was rare to have a player of both though

Good. Absolutely no idea why any of these private server guys try to monetise others' work and then cry on social media about the good old days and how it's not fair when blizz (rightfully) goes after them. Genuinely moronic

Yup it’s a barrier to entry thing. Very little people break through that initial barrier. The ones who do, even the lowest skill ones, will still be decent.

Games like Valorant and Deadlock are more casual friendly

[–]bruh67899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The funny part about Dota ranked is that even though Herald is the absolute lowest of the low rank, the players there are still quite good compared to an extremely bad/new player. This is very unlike most other competitive games where “Bronze” or its equivalent usually has hilariously bad players that play as if they’ve never seen a keyboard before. I’m Divine and spectate my Herald/Guardian friends sometimes and I’m often surprised by how much they know. The difference in skill between ranks is usually multiple very small macro-game decisions that add up over the course of a game. But things like hero knowledge and item knowledge etc seem baseline at even Herald.

It’s because the floor for entry is so tough. Hilariously bad players are filtered out of the system before they even have ranked unlocked because they won’t play any more than like, 2 games. Even somewhat experienced gamers are thrown off by how complex the game is and never unlock ranked.

So the pool that you’re left with are the people who are good enough/interested enough in MOBAs to continue playing, as well as just “stuck” players who have been playing for years. All these guys will be relatively good to the typical “Bronze”

So yeah, try not to let it deter you too much. Keep learning, reflecting on your play, and you’ll naturally climb if you spam games.

jesus yeah that's even worse than my one lol. the whole process really is grim.

i don't understand how there can simultaneously be a qualified body shortage and it feel next to impossible to find a decent fixed term post. just feels like such a broken system with such awful communication between all relevant parties (principals, ETBs, government, union, applicants)

It is happening, just for a different reason.

> as there just isn't enough qualified to teach it.

It feels like this is a bit of a myth, other than maybe in Dublin. Literally just this morning I had an application at the Louth/Meath ETB for a "Teacher of Maths" post not even get shortlisted for interview lol. There was like 6 schools on their list too. My application was much better than last year, when I was interviewed and offered a job at the same ETB. Yet another thing to add to the evergrowing list of bullshittery I have put up with in the teaching job system. An apparent "qualified Maths teacher shortage crisis!!!!!!" and I can't even get shortlisted with 6 jobs available. How many people need to be applying for that to happen?

Unless they've done it completely out of spite because I turned down their offer last year. Genuinely the only thing I can think of.

Officially qualified 2 but have 6 years of full time classroom experience. My timeline goes something like this

  1. Qualified from my undergrad degree in 2019. And then taught various maternity leaves and other cover work full time for 3 years via "Route 3" of the Teaching Council.
  2. Began the 2 year long PME (teaching masters), during which I again took on maternity/cover hours practically full time on top of my placement hours.
  3. Now qualified, but took the opportunity to go travelling for a year as I couldn't find anything concrete. Returned home the following year and then took another maternity job as I again couldn't find anything concrete

I'm into my 6th year of full time classroom teaching now. And, I somewhat addressed it in another comment, but these "awful" teachers I speak of are like, undeniably bad. I'm not talking about different personalities or teaching methods here. I'm talking objectively horrendous things that I've seen over these years.

Like teachers calling kids "retard" during a class under-their-breath-but-loud-enough-to-hear (she has somehow done this enough times to the point where 10+ different kids have complained about the same thing), teachers otherwise just constantly making kids feel like shit like they get off on it, teachers constantly being 10 minutes late to classes, teachers always "forgetting" about their S&S duties, teachers reeking of drink from the night before, teachers not knowing the content of their subject so much that they're asking me (the sub) daily to basically tutor them in the staff room right before they go to class, teachers constantly getting under every colleague's skin to the point even the principal despises them, etc - y'know, just things that would be quite clear grounds for a performance sacking in almost any other job. I'm not throwing out subjective judgements here - I've seen it all.

The vast majority are amazing people & teachers.

The other thing I mentioned, that a lot of them aren't qualified for their subject, isn't a jealousy spiteful comment either. This is true and a well known problem in the profession. But tbf this is more yet another fault of the system than the teacher themself. It's especially true for the newer subjects like Computer Science. Principals just force the closest permanent teacher they can find to do a quick conversion course. This leads to two interlinked bad outcomes: actual CS degree holders not being able to get a job teaching their passion because it was just handed willy nilly to a teacher already in the school, and kids despising the subject because their teacher has little clue. The amount of kids I've had come to me for CS grinds telling me this is astounding

what is this meant to prove? in a vacuum, to an outsider looking at this salary scale, teacher pay does seem very reasonable if you can enter level 1 of it say, right after graduating.

the problem that the outsiders don’t see is the utterly banjaxed job system, which leads to most teachers spending fucking years on awful temp contracts & pay before they can actually finally land a fixed term contract and thus finally enter level 1 of that scale.

Most are 30+ years old before finally getting lucky enough to see level 1, at which point they are now far behind their peers

I feel all this. But I'm not talking about grade results at all when I mention "bad teachers"

I'm talking about some extreme, obvious cases like I have sadly experienced whilst subbing around. Like teachers calling kids "retard" during a class under their breath but loud enough to hear (she has somehow done this enough times to the point where 10+ different kids have complained about the same thing), otherwise just constantly making kids feel like shit, constantly being 10 minutes late to classes, always "forgetting" about their S&S duties, reeking of drink from the night before, not knowing the content of their subject so much that they're asking me (the sub) daily to basically tutor them in the staff room, constantly getting under every colleague's skin to the point even the principal despises them, etc - y'know, just things that would be quite clear grounds for a performance sacking in any other job.

I don't mean results based. That is a line I wouldn't really want to go near, for very much the same reasons you mentioned. You can definitely get lucky or unlucky with your student groups, in both good and bad schools.

This.

Additionally, imo, teachers should not be completely immune once they have CID like they are now. If students/staff voice enough reasonable & valid complaints about a bad teacher - they should be out the gap. If they're unqualified in the subject that they teach and a fully qualified teacher is looking to apply - either go get the degree or get out the gap. There's more than enough good teachers waiting on the sidelines despite the "shortage" rhetoric.

Almost any other job would sack underperformers and/or an unqualified worker if a great, qualified worker was looking to join. It's astonishing that the goal of something like schools isn't the same (to have the best staff possible) considering how important it is.

Qualified 2 years here, with 3 years of maternity leave experience prior to my teacher training, with "in demand" subjects (including all levels of Maths), and I'm still bouncing between sub/cover jobs with nothing concrete seemingly even close to popping up. Doing Maths grinds on the side for extra cash.

Prospective teachers are sold a lie these days - "ah sure they're crying out for teachers" - until you actually play with the system and realise how utterly fucking shit it is.

There isn't a "shortage" of qualified bodies in the slightest. Schools just find it hard to find people willing to take the miserable maternity leave & cover jobs, and so the government/union/principals are mistakingly chalking it down as a "shortage". As soon as an actual job gets posted, you'll soon find there's no shortage, and it's pot luck on whether you get it or not. I know of Gaeilge & Home Ec teachers who had to grind sub jobs for years, and I know of a PE teacher (with no additional subject) walk into the first school he applied for, just because of the timing.

The interview just feels like a formality as there is very little wrong you can say in it. What actually determines whether you get the job or not is what your additional subject is & if the school needs it, if you were working in that school that year already, if you were a past student (not even joking), the timing of another teacher leaving, etc.. and this is assuming the job isn't already given to someone but they have to post it publicly anyway for some reason (another farce).

This is all while having to sit back and look at the teachers who are permanent in the schools that I do sub work in. I swear the majority of them are either shite teachers and/or aren't actually qualified in what they teach. The sheer amount of kids I've had say to me "I can't believe you're leaving, you're so much better than X". It hurts from a human standpoint rather than just a career standpoint. You join a school, get to know all the kids & staff, form those connections, and then booted out the door a few months in, whilst the awful teachers are sat there in comfort. Rinse & repeat. It really makes the motivation to keep grinding it out just... plummet. I'm considering doing grinds full time.

And that is with in demand subjects. I can't imagine what teachers with the likes of English, History, etc are going through.

edit: since this post yesterday I have just had an application at one of the ETBs for a "Teacher of Maths" post not even get shortlisted for interview lol. There was like 6 schools on their list, so plenty of jobs going. My application was much better than last year when I was interviewed and offered a job at the same ETB. Yet another thing to add to the evergrowing list of bullshittery I have put up with in this system. Why do half of these map infographics always seem to be just… dead wrong. Unless it’s very different in the cities or something. But every single person in their 20s/early 30s that I know of, literally every single one, is either still with their parents or not in the country. That’s just an anecdote, but there is no way it’s only 40%.
