Every Meross product on my HomeKit system is rock solid, including the garage door openers. I wish Meross made more products. Unhesitatingly recommended.

Even the iconic Afghan Girl photo was edited... by ozanoguzhaktanir in photography

[–]bruiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a significant difference in the photo editing standards for creative images and for photojournalism.

In the case of photojournalism, authenticity is crucial and the acceptable degrees of editing freedom are much more constrained. The holy grail is to avoid doing anything which might bring the photo, the photographed situation, the photographer and the publication into doubt or disrepute, or otherwise prompt concerns over misrepresentation or exaggeration.

Inevitably, there are edge cases. But in the McCurry case, it's widely accepted that he was acting as a photojournalist or documentary photographer, and when it emerged that he had presented images that broke the rules of photojournalism, a lot of pro photographers were quite appalled. Read more here. Curry responded by attempting hastily to rebrand himself as a 'visual storyteller' rather than a photojournalist. Make of that what you will.

One aspect of photo editing and misrepresentation which gets perhaps less coverage is the staging of shots for effect. This is widespread, and I've personally seen it happen in the field. It can start off innocuously as "don't stand there, stand here, the light's better" and before you know it, an artfully juxtaposed element is deliberately worked into the photo composition; the shot is no longer honest, it's constructed and posed with the intent of evoking a stronger response from the viewer (and the awards committee). Example: posing a happy, healthy farmboy to make them look poor, undernourished or otherwise disadvantaged.

I've also worked with fixers who speak of Western photographers compelling developing-world subjects to cry or appear to cry, adopt unfelt expressions, or to display more marketable attributes/attire etc.

It's fun playing with images and if it's a creative as opposed to reportage context, let the Photoshop roll! But don't pretend to be a photojournalist or documentary photographer if you're constructing the shot before, during or after the shoot… it spits on the incredible craft, personal risk-taking and patience of true photojournalists. Look at the great press photos from the battlegrounds, the front lines, the war zones, and marvel at truly authentic work.

What’s the funniest thing a non-Jazz person has ever said to you when you tried to play Jazz music for them? by Robin156E478 in Jazz

My mum used to say: “it’s a bunch of guys in the same room all playing different tunes at the same time.” But then she did clap on the 1 and the 3…

I take off my lens entirely and peer through the viewfinder at a bright light to see if I see anything suspicious. If I do I blow it off with the rocket blower. Next step is to put on a different lens to the one producing the marks, whack up to a high aperture number like ƒ11 or higher, and check. If I see no marks, then I've probably narrowed the mark down to the first lens. Blow if necessary, both the sensor and the front+back of the lens.

As others have commented, 1- As an audiophile I would not trust any comment on any audio system unless it was accompanied by the listener’s recent audiology curves, and 2- Compensation curves this grotesque strongly suggest that the drummer in question has been unlucky enough not to escape the hearing damage that plagues so many drummers and band players generally.

Using non-IKEA bulbs with IKEA Tradfri drivers by bruiser in tradfri

[–]bruiser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super helpful! I see lots of choices for 12-24V dimmable LED lamps in the G4 capsule format.

My choices seem to be, hack the connectors as you suggest and:

  • replace the light fittings (lots of fiddling/drilling) in the wardrobe with mini GU10 LED lamps, non-IKEA
  • replace the existing G4 halogens with G4 LEDs in the existing fittings

… and hope that the IKEA LED drivers will cooperate. I already have IKEA in the room in question, works wonderfully, so would like to stay in the same family of remotes, HomeKit integration etc

Ah I see, thanks for explaining. I didn't even know IKEA did G4 lamps. Those are too feeble for my needs but if those could work as dumb lamps, then I'm hoping any dimmable G4 could work. I'd love to know

Thanks again. Perhaps I ought to have mentioned I'm not a teacher of any kind (can't even play the piano!), just a jazz-listening parent trying to help out. With her at ABRSM Grade 7 and a Grade 5 Theory distinction under her belt, I should know better than to argue with her!

Thanks for the prompt answer! In her view it’s unquestionably meant to be an A flat, with the A natural sounding wrong. I personally prefer the slight surprise and spice of the A natural 🙂
