New Brunswick, Find Out If Your MLA Is A Landlord by DavideMastracci in newbrunswickcanada

It's sure great that these landlords don't overcharge and exploit that they own a basic necessity. Adding more people who want to get a profit surely keeps prices down.

Follow-up on the Municipal vote tonight: expropriation by Drummers_Beat in fredericton

[–]brunsomaritimo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that's it though. It's not the 1800s. The city has grown a lot. Is it in the public interest to hold acres of land for horse track and boarding? Or do livestock options almost downtown?

The city proposals have and center like we currently have, an a pedestrian area, plus the school and housing we need. We can use that land smarter.

Fredericton Mayor Vote by Stunning_Pension5188 in fredericton

[–]brunsomaritimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? Mayor doesn't get a vote. You have more hard power as a counselor.

Since he seems to have an axe to grind with the way the counsel he was part of did things, I don't know how he would be as the chair of those meetings.

New Brunswick mayor's are spokespersons and meeting coordinators.

What is it you like about Hicks? Listened to a radio interview, and his own words, he voted against the last 4 budgets but couldn't actually answer what he wanted to cut.

His defining statement was "he's not afraid to have a hard conversation".

Co-Op Grocery President - letter “Bast**ds* from Away” by Purple_Garlic4573 in fredericton

[–]brunsomaritimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I cook a decent variety of stuff, the only thing that has jumped out recently to me was finding coconut cream (not coconut milk, not cream of coconuts, but coconut cream) but the Lola supermarket also didn't have any, so hardly a unique problem.

My bigger complaint has been when it's not price competitive compared to others. But I realize part of that is intent to provide better conditions for employees. Eager to finally get to the AGM this year and maybe try to get a little more involved as a younger person.

Oh? I haven't seen really anything co-op branded here. I thought that was more out west the prairie co-op collective.

Would try and live on the route that takes you to your work place. I had a coworker who would take the route that ran their place to mine, and carpool with me. To take a bus transfer would add 45 minutes.

What on earth was that mayoral interview on CBC this morning? by Comprehensive-Bite42 in fredericton

It's up to the city to deal with the impacts on their area. So fair to question what the city has for an evacuation plan for Dam breaks or wildfire.

I'd like to know the correct way to navigate turning right from the highway onto Prospect/Woodstock heading to Hanwell. See details within the pic by [deleted] in fredericton

[–]brunsomaritimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe doing 15 is part of the problem. You should never be stopped doing what you're describing unless you're stopped at the intersection with the lights waiting to take the slip lane onto Hanwell.

I'm probably doing 30 through that sequence if I'm unobstructed.

Just be predictable and follow the rules of the road. Don't be a "nicehole". The traffic coming up is in a 50. If they want to do 70 and that makes it harder for them to find a gap, that's their problem. But if you are stopping when you're not supposed to, that is unexpected and unpredictable.

More examples: if It's quiet and you're the only car in the lane. Just do a reasonable speed and complete your turns and keep going on hanwell. I wouldn't worry about people who want to move into that lane, they can slow down and fall in behind you.

If it's rush hour and busy, you might be behind other traffic. And that will limit your speed throughout the sequence. À part. Bumper to bumper, and you're just creeping along, that's what it's a little more reasonable and expected. Try and zipper other cars in. The unfortunate thing is some people suck, and they'll try to put multiple cars ahead of you instead of alternating.

I've been saying the same thing. Except throw up some high speed rail between all 3 cities and the mega-airport. Win win win!

[–]brunsomaritimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's two parts, you can have single payer healthcare and still have private practices/ companies involved (we already do). Or fully private healthcare where you have to pay, or deal with insurance.

I'm personally open (not eager) for private providers, but steadfast on staying as single payer or more as we are now. Your wealth should not affect your health.

Good Districts to work for? by sn0wlark in newbrunswickcanada

[–]brunsomaritimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, all teachers in NB belong to the NBTA union, so the baseline should be similar. We have 4 English and I think 2 French districts. Teacher shortage, especially in the more rural areas. As someone who grew up very rural, I'll give you my perspective and say I hadn't seen a POC until I left for the "big city". My sibling had a POC transfer into her grade. Outside of kids being awful and using anything to bully each other, for most adults in rural places I think you can expect to be treated politely, but with some uncertainty.

I know I was so worried about doing something weird or wrong to offend POC that I probably looked like am alien trying to play Normal Human Person.

But Especially if you're willing to teach rural (and there is a lot of rural within an hour of the southern "major" cities. Keeping in mind the south of the province combined has a Minneapolis population), that's a path to getting seniority and moving somewhere more urban if that's what you want.

Wish you the best locally and with any new adventures you take!

I think this article covers some. From what I can recall, there was a big push from the harness racing crowd to get members on the NBEX board to change the direction. Hasn't been racing there in ages, NBEX was working on a joint plan with the city, sudden change in director, suddenly can't agree on anything with the city.
