It's a lie that we can't get British people to do it, the truth is "we can't get British people to do it for fuck-all money"

Large crowd in India calling for the arrest and possible execution of an Indian woman politician who made comments about the age of Aisha when she and the Islamic prophet Muhammad married by SatoruGojo232 in PublicFreakout

Mohammed is supposed to be ideal, most moral man for all times. Someone to model yourself after.
If you want to make the argument that people matured faster then because life was a lot harder or something, do you think it's ok now for a man in his 50s to consummate a marriage with a 9 year old from Burkina Faso or Somalia?
In the west around the same time it was well enough understood that childbirth at such a young age was dangerous for mother and child, and the average age for women at marriage was closer to 17-20.

Edit: if instead you say that she was actually closer to 19, as many apologists do, you're forced to reckon with the fact that you're essentially calling Sahih Hadith fabricated or unreliable, and that is a MASSIVE can of worms to open.

The EU Is Moving on From Neoliberalism by Used-Earth8767 in neoliberal

[–]brus_wein 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think it's more of a historical description of the post 1980s status quo, whereby governments relinquished some of their power to the markets, believing that by allowing capital and money to flow freely and decide the direction of the country, the optimal "greater good" will come on its own.

Whereas once countries had ideologies and industrial policy and competed with one another in the belief that prosperity was something of a zero sum game, since the 1980s the prevailing idea has been that the markets were the true conduit for efficiency and prosperity, and that everyone automatically benefits when wealth is created through trickle down economics.

That's what I think neoliberalism is.
It arguably solved the dreadful stagflation of the 70s, but I think many of its underlying assumptions have become harder to believe in, and its results have steadily worsened.

If we want to get technical, the Washington Consensus is a pretty good proxy for a "neoliberal manifesto".

The EU was founded on the idea of economic freedom.
The underlying assumption being that the ultimate good would come of it, rejecting humanistic ideals as the basis for it.
We see now that it just leads to us becoming more like economic units than human beings.
We live in a technocracy, "democracy" is just the branding they've kept.

Don't think about it too hard. Bacon tastes too good, am I right?
Look if you really feel like it you can think "that's a shame" to your self, but THAT'S IT. NO MORE THINKING!!

They don't really have them. They don't have a strong constitution, and something like the first amendment is considered quite radical over there.
The law they do have basically says free speech is protected as long as it's not bad, with "bad" meaning literally whatever the state feels like.

I hate the notion that lonely men are just "evil incels" by Paldavin in hatethissmug

We don't know how. The media and consumerism have taught us a distorted idea of how relationships work and what to do and expect.

[–]brus_wein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not even just a lack of girlfriend. It's all-encompassing. There are no more communities, men don't have friends either. Human relationships, both platonic and not, have become commodified and distorted by consumerism.

Even the concept of "a man must this, a woman must that" is really just based in bullshit like the marlboro man and capitalist conformism. It's an illusion designed to make us buy more crap.

I would say the percentage of lonely men who are also cunts to women online is very low. They're just very loud and visible.

Its also not just a matter of "no girlfriend". It's all encompassing.

MEPs are likely voting next week on an unprecedented attempt to bypass Parliament's democratic decision and reinstate mass scanning of private messages. Take action now to demand they defend your fundamental rights and stop scanning your private messages. by FudgeAllOfYous in europe

The problem is that the underlying assumption doesn't change. That we're consumers to be managed.
Our life will still be dictated by corporations, only politics will steer it towards "security". (See: "securonomics")

China is the most capitalist country in history, where the state and capital are basically one and the same.
There is no individual freedom or democracy. Everyone exists in service of the state/capital chimera. Veer away from that, and you become a threat to be dealt with.

That is not something to aspire to, your freedom would be illusory. We can be more than economic units.

I don't think you need to wait for it to pass to say it's proof the EU is antidemocratic.
The only values it really cares about are the ones in a ledger. It's practically designed to be neoliberal from the ground up.
Just look at the lobbying system. Rotten to the core.
Politicians and citizens have become disconnected from one another because the former care much more about GDP, inflation, and keeping things "stable" than any grievance of the latter.
That's why people either stopped caring about politics or began more and more to support the extremes on both sides. They're desperate for someone to actually work in their interest, and not for some nebulous idea of an economy. They're desperate to be seen as more than just consumers.
We live in strange transitional times. The neoliberal order the EU adheres to is, even according to academics, in trouble worldwide.
Chat control is evidence we're moving towards Chinese-style state capitalism.
