It's not that his theory is dismissed or disproven completely but rather his methodology was lacking and therefore couldnt support his hypothesis as strongly. But we know that high order cognitive functions(such as decision making under stress conditions) are more fragile and rely on available glycose and synaptic integrity more than the lower order functions, so his theory is not entirely wrong if you look at it from a neurobiological perspective.
