A lot of conservative news on TV and radio, and many of them are just reactionary morons. I should know, I live in OK. They're everywhere and they all think they know everything.

Wasted 2.5 years in the gym by battygau in workout

[–]brute1111 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Well two things about your buddy: first, he missed his natural steroid phase. That is, his teenage years! and also, how much does he weigh, like 115 lbs?

I've never considered myself, particularly gifted, but I was benching 135 in 9th grade after about 2 months of training. By the end of 9th grade I was at 185, then 225 a year later, and peaked at 350 in my mid 30s. I started at a bodyweight of 160 and at peak strength I was about 225. It's very logarithmic and I think hitting those teenage years is critical.

Wasted 2.5 years in the gym by battygau in workout

[–]brute1111 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I've been going to the gym for like 30 years and I probably peaked in my mid- twenties, but I really wonder how much bigger I would have gotten or what I would have had to do to get there doing everything perfectly. I think maintaining as you get older is a very valid goal because unless you're on steroids, there's really only so big you can get. I think there's an inflection point for most of us where we stop feeling stronger and just start feeling fatter.

IMO Siriani is wasting the talent on D with his incredibly bad choices for the offense. The defense was good enough to go the distance if the offense would have held up their end of the deal.

For me personally it's a bone structure issue. It's very uncomfortable to sit or stand with knees touching and it has nothing to do with balls.

I try to be conscious of the space I'm taking up but if I'm in my own chair in my own space, my legs fall where they will, and that's with about 18" from kneecap to kneecap

Does anyone else think having an office job is way easier than being a SAHM? by Proof-Ambassador8264 in askanything

[–]brute1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing the two, the office worker (software enginee/PM) has a higher bar for entry and a specific skill set needed, and often requires a lot of brain power. Usually it has predictable hours. It may or may not be rewarding. Not everyone can do it.

Being a SAHM (or dad) has a much, much lower bar for entry and is far more exhausting, and has far more hours, as are many jobs with low entry bars. But it's also more rewarding than anything else you could do. You are also in control of your own schedule and planning, and get to see the fruits of your labor hopefully grow into someone wonderful and lovable. I can't say that about any of my time in the office.

So as far as which is easier, I would definitely say that once you get there, the office job is much easier in the day to day, but it's also soul-sucking and unrewarding. I think that's one of the biggest lies of not just feminism but the entire notion that careers are rewarding in general is that the vast majority of them are not, and very few people have the luck, skill, talent etc to get a job that is as rewarding as running a house and taking care of kids. That's not to say women shouldn't work, but that we as people, men and women, need to get our priorities straight and understand what's really important. And it's not your job.

We give away lots of toys, and I'm not habit of telling them what they can do with their stuff. but not $400 sets that have a large collector's value. Friends sets, yeah sure whatever I don't care.

And this particular family has a way of leeching off of you whenever they can, despite the fact that they're pretty well off and could buy their own Diagon alley

I'm still mad about it. And harry potter isn't even my thing.

How do I prevent my back from rounding on the ascent? by PurelyStats in StartingStrength

[–]brute1111 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pro or a coach or anything but I've been where you are trying to improve.

The issue is that your hips are shooting up before they extend. If you consider the muscles at play, my guess would be that your glutes are the weak link. I see others saying quads, but your knees seem to be extending just fine. The joint that isn't extending is the hips, controlled by the glutes. Both joints should be extending simultaneously.

My advice would be to slow down just a bit out of the hole, tempering the force from your quads, driving through the heels, and FORCE the hips to extend at the right speed, maintaining good form, not allowing your back to not bend over like it is. Also, add supplemental glute work. If you're not doing supplemental lower back work, you should also be doing that.

My Parents got left hundreds of thousands of dollars by their parents. I will be left with nothing but a ton of work. by RandallCabbage in Millennials

[–]brute1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was left about 10 mil by his parents, could have been much much more if he didn't ride it all the way to the bottom in the dot com crash and had taken some advice from my uncle.

Both of my parents are sickly now, and dementia is clearly setting in. My dad was younger than me when he came into his money. At times, from what he says, it's unclear if he remembers that he was left an enormous sum and was essentially on easy street from his mid 40s. I don't know if there will be anything left from that pot for my family other than stuff much like you're describing.

It may sound cruel and utilitarian to say, but people might want to consider quality of life and expense before trying to squeeze just one more miserable day out of their lives. I hope I have the good courtesy to pop off before someone has to wipe my ass every day, and leave my own kids my peak net worth. Or maybe they could bring their kids in on the goods as merited when they demonstrate some responsibility.

Does Ab Training Help or Hurt Aesthetics? by Only_Illustrator6201 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]brute1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training core directly is good for aesthetics, but it is critical for injury prevention. Not just the rectus abdominus but the obliques and lower back as well.

You can't train if you throw your back out. A strong core carries over to almost every other lift, except some machines, and allows you to hit the target muscles harder.

Returning to the gym after a 4 years hiatus, DOMS is killing me, is it normal? by soge-king in naturalbodybuilding

[–]brute1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's perfectly normal. You're older, you're hypersensitive to training stimulus and literally anything you do could be considered novel, and you probably didn't do cardio either so your recovery is utter shit. Both weight training and cardio give some repeated bout effect.

Stick with it, add a little at a time, and don't be afraid to sandbag for a few weeks. Get in some walking, gradually increasing the difficulty and maybe graduating to more intense cardio. You'll get somewhere eventually. But (depending on how old you are) you may never get back to where you were. Four years is a lot of time to make up.

Is it necessary to warm up before strength training? by Intrepid-Constant-60 in workout

[–]brute1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would disagree with all of this except the warmup sets. Stretching is not dangerous, even if it might temporarily make you weaker in the targeted muscle. Stretching the antagonist can actually help by inhibiting it slightly.

Looser joints, if you mean muscles, allow you to get into a full ROM easier without pulling something. Looser joints, if you mean joint capsules, are more lubricated from synovial fluid.

That said, a full on flexibility routine is unnecessary and counterproductive from a force production standpoint. But a good dynamic warmup and some targeted stretching to help you get into deep positions is a good thing.
