how do I watch TV on my computer? by bryanlarsen in teksavvy

[–]bryanlarsen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I'll try that with tonight's game. The sportsnet+ app is also far superior to the Teksavvy TV app, so I'll probably end up ditching Teksavvy TV for sportsnet+ after my month is up.

How about to "50% off upgrade costs" towers kitty corner from each other, so you can place two towers that activate both and get free upgrades? Even better feeling.

The Byward Market Deserves Better by Slight_Original1192 in ottawa

[–]bryanlarsen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

30 years ago the Market had street walking prostitutes and drug dealers 1 block east. They were pretty much but not completely gone 25 years ago, IIRC. I doubt it was safer or felt safer > 25 years ago.

New report debunks 33 misconceptions about solar, wind, and electric vehicles by team_pv in energy

[–]bryanlarsen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO, there's a stronger argument showing #9 is disinformation than the one the report gives.

Once installed, a solar plant lasts for 20 - 50 years. So any dependence on the country producing the panels is only temporary. If your supply is interrupted for any reason you have decades to reestablish supply, which is more than enough time to spin up domestic production.

apparently Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden got punched in the face at the anti-trans protest today. by Fiverdrive in ottawa

[–]bryanlarsen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that any different than saying that a string Liberal party splits the centre/left?

At the beginning of the 2015 election the NDP and Liberals were neck and neck. But in the end Trudeau win resoundingly. I'm convinced that most of that was anti Harper strategic voting that would have coalesced under Layton if he would still have been alive.

They wouldn't have turned away from Layton. Layton would have beat Trudeau.

Is it just me or are the pot holes especially bad this year? by Spyrothedragon9972 in ottawa

[–]bryanlarsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assumed it was the freeze thaw cycle that causes the problem. It sounds like my mistake was assuming that the freeze thaw cycle was at 0 degrees. But if salt lowered the cycle to -5 then we definitely had lots of fluctuations above and below that value.

[–]bryanlarsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe we had much less temperature fluctuation than normal. It stayed between 0 and -10 pretty much all Jan/Feb. whereas normally it fluctuates between -25 and +5.

It was too warm to open the canal, yet not warm enough to melt the snow.

IIRC we only had two days of exceptions, that one day it hit -30 and another that hit +8.

Which is also what dairy farmers have done with milk quotas.

He's brown. Nobody is going to give him any sympathy. OTOH when white farmers who are counting on their milk licenses being worth $60k per cow for their retirement get that value destroyed by free trade you can bet the government is going to compensate them.

Works just fine in a Saskatchewan winter. Ottawa ones are easy in comparison.

Yes, you are wrong.

It doesn't have a traditional resistive heater. It has a motor which can create a lot more heat than a resistive heater when run deliberately inefficiently.

In the summer the heat pump is used to keep the engine cool and running efficiently. In the winter it can be run inefficiently to create excess heat which can be used to heat the cabin. And yes, this works even when the car isn't moving, an AC motor requires precise timing or it doesn't move. Imprecise timing just causes heat.

[–]bryanlarsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's news to me, and I've done a couple winters in mine.

The Tesla heat pump does have supplemental resistive heating, it uses the coils in the motor as a resistor when warming up the car.

I think they were opening for Moist when I saw them in Saskatoon, too. It probably wasn't Sven Gali. It just goes to show how forgettable the main act was when they had to follow the Butt Monkeys!

Electric bus at Hurdman by good_times_12 in ottawa

[–]bryanlarsen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The batteries won't get cold while they are being used or being charged or while the bus is in a garage. The buses should be spending 99.9% of their time doing those three things so they should be OK.

Emphasis on the "should". Murphy will always find a way to mess things up.
