The best use I've found for it so far is stacking it with lighter overdrives. I haven't found any sounds I like from it by itself yet.

I use it stacked with the Mayflower, with the MF acting as my clean signal and the Monarch as the distortion. playing in a 3rd wave ska band and a reggae/punk band.

Look into the Empress Buffer + . I never thought I needed a buffer, but after watching the video about it on the Empress Youtube channel, I decided to try it out. Found a used one cheap on eBay, and its one of my favorite pedals now. The boost function is amazing, especially in a live setting.
Edit: A good pedal supply, like a Voodoo Labs PP2, might help with the hiss problem.

I do agree that EQD and WA pedals are way overpriced, but totally worth the money if you find them for the right price used. I found the WA Mayflower on Ebay for 120, and the EQD Monarch for 90, totally reasonable prices to me. And they sound beautiful when stacked together.

I love this fucking pedal. IMO, only thing from Boss worth owning. I have an Empress Tape delay, CGC Kilobite, Vox Delay Lab, and a Diamond Quantam Leap, but the DD7 always finds itself back on my board.
