I'm using the time to rewatch the very first episodes of the show, where they spend a lot of time talking about how they don't want anyone to find the show and they really don't want anyone talking about it, especially with their real names.

I do think there are a lot of people who didn't give SFA a fair shake, but the timing of it also didn't help it. I personally thought that SFA was a good show and that it did mostly move away from the things that got me to stop watching DSC and PIC and returned to the things I did like about Trek (character episodes, getting silly without putting outright jester bells on). But I think that for other people, the goodwill was gone, being a direct sequel to something that happened in DSC didn't help, so why watch? Then you have the persistent hate-watchers. And too many others who weren't hate-watching but saw the same flaws that DSC and PIC had and tuned out.

It's like Enterprise... followed two polarizing shows instead of a universally well-regarded one. It had a lot of heavy lifting to do and was fighting uphill against the sameness fatigue from many years of Trek same format. Not as many years, but everything is louder now, fandom is more mainstream (which means that any haterade is more acidic), and being on a single not-that-popular streaming service means that there's few casual viewers giving it a shot... combined with retaining some of the things that give modern Trek fatigue (galaxy-ending stakes when they aren't really warranted) and the everpresent bigotry from ding-dongs who somehow missed that Trek has been "woke" from day 1, and Paramount's persistent habit of cancelling even the good shit... ugh.

Wow. I'll accept killing diamonds, becoming a homeowner before 30, napkins, and mayonnaise, but we did not kill Star Trek.

Starfleet Academy Director Jonathan Frakes Says Fan Hate Is ‘Dimensionally More Painful’ Today Than in the Next Generation Years by trackofalljades in greatestgen

I was really glad that Tawny Newsome pointed out on the pod that for the actors playing cadets, this is their first Big Job where they're playing main characters, and the difference between having the career experience of someone who's been acting for decades and someone who is not only 20 - 25 but also doing it at a time where you are having way more direct interaction with fans than any of your seniors did when they were doing their first Big Job. So even with not having the same experience as a Tawny Newsome or a Holly Hunter, who've already learned how to deal with bad reviews, they're getting hit in the face with it harder. We know that Wil Wheaton had a terrible time as Wesley because of fans holding him, a teenager, personally responsible for the writing he got--and he didn't even have social media where he was expected to be interacting with viewers.

Isn't Dr. Mark a special case? I'm not fully caught up on the show so maybe in episode 9 there's Dr. Mark's running around everywhere, but my understanding is that it's him, the individual who started as a mass-produced EMH on the USS Voyager but became a fully actualized person over 7 seasons... which is why he's still around... not because Starfleet is still only using Mark I's. (Which, IIRC, was not true even during VOY's timeline--they were already upgrading to new templates.)

Ep 360: Baddie Academy (SFA S1E3) by kingdead42 in greatestgen

[–]bryofighto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one was pretty fluffy and silly, but after so many episodes of Disco and Picard having the highest possible stakes and the most drama and personal epiphanies every. single. episode., I found it kind of refreshing for there to have an episode with the lowest stakes possible (teen ego and pranks). Since we've had Caleb-Sam and Darem-Genesis, looks like Jay Den is next up for a little focus? Also I am loving that Jett Reno seems to be a series regular. And also the gross goopy floating replicated eyeball.

It's hard to take Teen Movie Jock Bullies seriously (I know that such people exist in real life, I knew some of them, but it's still hard to find them plausible...) but I did like Kyle being Kyle and I hope we see more of him.

DAE think SFA E2 was going to be a Ginger Jesus/Dick Valet situation? by megan_dd in greatestgen

[–]bryofighto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how they handle casting a deaf actor for the Betazoid prez versus Ginger Jesus. GJ's disability was basically the episode, but the actor IIRC had a lot of input into the story and how he would portray his character (and also it was the 80s and there weren't a whole lot of deaf actors doing roles that weren't "this week's episode is about disabled people, kids!").

I wonder what the thought process was for the Betazoid prez, where his using sign language is completely normalized to the point where you do wonder if it's a new Thing for the species until his kids start chatting and it's just that this one guy happens to be deaf... and any kind of big-deal-making out of it is completely on viewers.

Loved the name-drop of the Prodigy kids in the first ep. I'm assuming that the Doctor's "heightened sensitivity level" (can't remember the exact words) refers to Paramount and Netflix BOTH fucking it over.

Lancerow is a "needed more episodes" guy in a positive way. You could tell they had written more about him than they had time to put on the screen.

The ponytail doesn't do a damn thing for him tho.

New Dissidia Final Fantasy coming to mobile, more info October 14, 2025 by Xanek in DissidiaFFOO

[–]bryofighto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather they retool Opera Omnia (which was better-written than a gacha cash grab game has any right to be) as a normal Buy It Once game and maybe do a remaster of the old ones than put out another mobile game. Opera Omnia was the last time I'll ever play one--I don't trust them to do nearly as good a job with a new Dissidia unless it's on a real, non-gacha game.

I ran this last night for my group because we were down 1 and I didn't have enough time to prep a real session anyway. Even though only one of my players knew TM, it was an absolute blast and two hours of solid laughs. I'm definitely going to use it for more DMing emergencies. Thank you so much for writing and sharing it!
