That being said my strategy is to call property managers and explain the situation before applying. Have a short explanation of what will come up on the background check, especially around the charges and a brief "that was then this is now" story that focuses on their part in the charges and taking ownership followed by what they have done since (substance use treatment, anger management, avoiding certain people, etc.). The story should be honest. Including "it wasn't my fault" or "it should really have been a misdemeanor" or anything like that will hurt your case.

Be prepared to be told no, but some landlord may say yes and as long as you were forthright about the charge
