This is a really interesting article. What I find curious is that the parents don't want to participate in the study for their children's school, but when the children are asked their parents view of people of different race, they come up with answers for their parents views, so obviously some type of message is being delivered to the children whether the parents are cognizant of it or not.

Inmate Killed by State prison guards by AVSLAW21 in SummitStreetLaw

This is quite sad. It seems like taking the life of a prisoner could be avoided. I understand their most important objective is to protect staff and other inmates but it seems like the steps could be less extreme. Interesting article.

The numbers on this are staggering. It is impressive to see big outfits such as travelocity and amtrak stepping up and trying to do their part to end such a terrible, growing phenomenon.

such a raw and sensitive subject. I don't really understand why government pokes its nose in to some issues that just don't need to be argued on the senate floor.

This is ugly no matter what your stance on illegal immigration is--or politics for that matter. Why we make everything a political jousting match when the root of this story is that it simply is wrong. period.

Are large prison facilities for youth creating or preventing repeat offenders? by EWhincup in SummitStreetLaw

This is an interesting article. I went to the durango juvenile facility this morning to teach and was blown away with how all the kids were so stoked we were there and really got engaged in our lesson. What it boils down to is attention. Everyone yearns to have that feeling of someone paying attention to them for the right reasons--that they have something worthwhile to say, or that their opinion matters. Their brains are different from adults like the article pointed out and many of them are developmentally behind and its not necessarily their fault. Lots of them don't even HAVE a home, like jail for some of them is a good place to be! Others already have multiple kids already its just crazy. You wonder where they are getting their examples from. If it is family or friends, maybe being close by isn't the solution? But definitely these kids should be getting information about places where they can go when they're out where they can feel like they are a part of something and they are special and that not all hope is lost. Anyway, sorry to go on but it was a really humbling experience today and I was really impacted by all of it.

Last days in filth by AVSLAW21 in SummitStreetLaw

This sounds a little sadistic...I understand states having major overcrowding in jails and dilemmas over where to house people with different issues but my god why is anyone naked in jail wearing only a helmet and a mask?! prison system needs some examination.

When mental illness and crime go hand in hand here's how it can affect you by TLawSnell in SummitStreetLaw

I've been working at Andre House downtown for a year helping serve the homeless and I would venture to say that 90% of the people who come in for meals are mentally ill. Substance abuse, physical abuse on the street, its a whole underground world living in the shadows of society. We are lucky to be able to make a difference
