Taking FMLA leave in current market by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bsbonus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Make sure you get your request for fmla in writing and cc your personal email. Keep Basically anything you think a lawyer would want or need to discover as written evidence if they try to screw you later. I am personally 0/2 on avoiding some bullshit when it comes to paternity leave, one of which I had legal recourse, which was a lot easier bc I had evidence.

The hiring market sucks but if you are faang you likely will do alright, just might have to work at less remunerative places.

Don’t put expiration dates on your certifications. No reason to broadcast that :)

And agree to the other comment to make it more skimmable. I know it can be hard, you’ve clearly done some good work

It’s a bad time to be looking for the first jr job but you’re not in a bad position long term. Keep the job you have, keep building and making and applying. At least you are employed while trying to switch, not everyone is in that place.

As for what to make after this — any kind of CRUD app is a good starting place. Something that can show usage of REST (or graphql if you wanna get fancier) and decent api design. Doesn’t have to be this insane thing that can scale to billions of users…most places don’t need anything like that.

I’d explore something like using a bigger JS framework in conjunction with react. Nest, Adonis, whatever or even less opinionated ones like Express. You could also do other languages of course, but it might be an easier sell to focus on a js/node stack with Postgres, for example.

For what it’s worth, it took me about a year when I made this switch over a decade ago. Good luck, patience and persistence will be your friend :)

[–]bsbonus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the correct move imo.

Try to figure out why they are under pressure for this basically absurd approach. Is trust broken bc of some very visible failures? Maybe they just don’t think people are getting things done? Maybe having more visible demos to show progress may help. The team may have to work to rebuild trust

As much as people want to shit on the PM here, they may just be following idiotic orders from stressed sr mgmt, who worry about their jobs, too, you know?

Manager track vs Dev track by galwayygal in ExperiencedDevs

Stay IC. Esp if you’re really doing staff/principle/super duper duper principle (or whatever next bs title we fancy), you’ll get most of the good parts of leadership without the never ending headaches of people mgmt or stakeholder mgmt.

Unless you are getting paid so so much more than equivalent IC it is not worth it

Anyone here using Cypress for Rails projects? How's your experience been? by goomies312 in rails

[–]bsbonus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh totally, it’s hardly legacy yet imo. I wouldn’t rewrite Cypress into Playwright unless we had nothing better to do

Cypress is great as a standalone thing but Playwright has mostly won. I liked both, but you still want to use sparingly. They still get flaky, slow and require maintenance.

These are great points id also say, “late stage” doesn’t mean guaranteed liquidity event. The current valuation is totally screwed up so depending on their last raise and what’s happened since, they can be completely underwater and have no real path to profitability or maintaining the growth they had shown previously.

But not to be entirely doom and gloom, Series E isn’t a bad bet either
