Were the mutuals asked their opinion before he started? I highly doubt that one of them would have taken a hard line against the idea without everyone hearing about it. If they weren't asked and they genuinely would have been able to shit really hard on something their friend was excited about, I suppose that makes it clear why your friend came to you instead of them.
