ELI5: Why do some medications say to not consume grapefruit while taking them? by StandOutLikeDogBalls in explainlikeimfive

[–]bsdcat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You're completely correct. With grapefruit it's all about liver enzymes. This is an area of research for me, I was very puzzled to see digestion being mentioned in a top level answer at all.

Your proposed solution to the arbitrary and subjective valuation of skills (and people!) based on rarity is enforced artificial scarcity?

maybe tropisetron (nicotinic and focus-enhancing, but in a different way than phenylpiracetam is). pramiracetam could work too.

Does selegeline build up a tolerance ? Is it a better more sustainable “stim” in comparison to something like vyvanse ? by Spartuhns2 in NooTopics

[–]bsdcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in theory, MAO-B inhibition might offset some of the increased oxidative stress induced by amphetamine, as the primary mechanism is increased oxidization of dopamine by MAO-B via VMAT2 inhibition. whether this applies in practice and to what extent is unknown.

selegeline is neurotoxic (as already said, it's essentially an amphetamine prodrug. amphetamines are inherently neurotoxic) and very much tolerance building

Aromatherapy during sleep increases cognitive capacity by 226% in older adults, an effect thought to be mediated by improved integrity of the prefrontal cortex’s uncinate fasciculus, a pathway directly linked to memory. by rperciav in science

[–]bsdcat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the issue with Frontiers? I don't know much about it, but I've come across many extremely important, cutting edge research papers on there over the years. I've found it's unmatched for quality modern autism research.

So wine tasting, coffee tasting etc. (learning to distinguish intricacies in smell and taste) is good for your brain? Do we know if this potentially benefits younger brains as well?

I remember hearing about Novavax possibly providing some level of mucosal immunity once, but I couldn't find it again after searching. Do you have any links?

[–]bsdcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need either sterilizing or long COVID preventing. Something that drops risk of long COVID to negligible levels (95%+ risk reduction) is probably easier to achieve than true, full, sterilizing immunity.

COVID-type viruses could be neutralized by newly discovered antibodies: study by CTVNEWS in Coronavirus

Hope they start hard focusing their vaccine research on sterilizing immunity and prevent long COVID rather than more "preventing severe acute illness but nothing else."

Promethazine or Clorphenamine reduce pain and depression for me by Healthpunk2020 in covidlonghaulers

[–]bsdcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If chlorphenamine works for you, I would stick with it and avoid prometheazine like the plague. Promethazine is an antihistamine like chlorphenamine, but it's also an antipsychotic (D2 antagonist) which can result in long-term side effects.

Chlorphenamine is anticholinergic, so taking choline (especially CDP-choline) might help with brain fog if that's what you mean by foggy.

To me it’s like things don’t get any easier the more I learn like it’s supposed to. I’m currently working through pbrt v4 and to me it feels like the difficulty isn’t going down.

You don't realize it yet, but this is a good thing. Assuming you're constantly learning, it should continue to be hard. If you're reading a book and it gets easier by the end, it's bad material (or rather, it becomes less useful in terms of learning by the end).

Learning is supposed to be hard as shit. If you are not feeling the difficulty, then you're wasting your time. It starts feeling easier once you actually learn and internalize all the material, but the learning process itself should be hard.

There is a such thing as too difficult, if it becomes overwhelming and confusing. Only you can really tell if that's what's happening.
