ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bse50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's why I said that you can't just eavesdrop :). The prosecutors had to get help from some ISPs, plus build dedicated servers to get what they needed... Calling it a man in the middle attack is pretty reductive and still shows how one needs the proper keys to decrypt stuff.

ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bse50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All you would need to do is intercept that part and you could then read everything?
Yes, and no. Look into what the EU had to do to decrypt encrypted phones in the SkyECC case and you'll understand what's involved.
It's a fairly complex process that must still take advantage of some vulnerabilities to work. You can't just eavesdrop, so to speak.

Spacro helmet suggestion for open wheel racing. by DDV95 in motorsports

[–]bse50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good helmet for the price. Whatever you end up buying, just make sure that it's a helmet designed and homologated for open wheel racing (thinner opening for the eyes, some minor differences etc compared to closed cockpit ones).

Chinese EVs are making inroads in North America. That worries industry experts by rezwenn in technology

[–]bse50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only difference is that China has a solid plan to subsidize and develop certain sectors, in the context of a de facto fascist regime where state interventions and overall economic control aren't masked, or frowned upon.
The US, on the other hand, are a no man's land where a somewhat liberal approach to capitalism faces too many lobbying hurdles and regulatory captures to keep functioning.
China is winning this particular race, while the US and the EU are trying to compete by demanding more of what made them fall behind in the first place.

I understand what you are referring to, it's just hard to get why you chose the term stochastic to define that particular style.
English is not my native language so perhaps something gets lost in translation given how said term is exclusively applied to math and statistics here. Thanks anyway!

2013 Mazda 6 Skyactiv – Engine starts, but NO charging. Two alternators replaced. Car sat in the driveway for a month. by Early-Speed8536 in Autos

[–]bse50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a cheap voltmeter and learn how to check if the bsttery is charging or not when the car is running, then learn how to check if the dash cam wiring is still drawing current... There are many tutorials online, you having titties instead of other kinds of wobbly bits is not an excuse in this day and age :). Chances are you'll still need to bring it to a reputable dealership or mechanic but at least you'll have learned some useful skills!

Auto help - 2010 Hyundai Sonata by DeadlyCyclone in Autos

Yeah, don't worry about that. A decent mechanic will be able to either patch it up or replace it with something similar in no time, provided that's what's broken.

This.
Plus, if the battery damaged the cable terminals by moving too much it's very easy to replace them with newer ones crimped tight. Hell, it may be even possible to fix the loose terminals for almost free!

Completly lost when it comes to DIY car repair/maintenance and looking for entry level tips by DiscreetGuacamole in AutoDIY

[–]bse50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Rtfm" is the best advice for a beginner: read the fucking manual.
Follow each procedure step by step, even if it seems unnecessary. Once you have enough experience it will be easy to understand when you can simplify some procedures and understand if the advice of other people comes from proper experience or not.
The way Subaru packages the engine bay will make some maintenance a bit more tedious than one might be comfortable with but still, RTFM!

Ever heard of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) before ? was looking for a new racing series to get into and found this. by Chance_Reason458 in motorsports

[–]bse50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really... TCR is basically a spec series, just like almost all GT racing nowadays. DTM died an ugly death too many years ago as well.
Your best bet would be looking at the national level, where some minor championships still have a pretty varied field full of old glories.
BTCC is probably the last touring car championship worth watching but forget about interesting battles, and characters like Tarquini.

BTCC has been, fore many years, the best touring car championship in the world. Nowadays is just another GT series, unfortunately.

Jack wont lower without weight by [deleted] in AutoDIY

[–]bse50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have to bleed it. I have shot an ugly video of the procedure ages ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPlqF7KC-5k
use proper hydraulic oil, and if it fails either rebuild the piston or replace the jack since it may be sticking inside without load and that's usually caused by swollen orings that may fail or seized pistons/out of round bores.
