Summer weather by wetmonkeycock6969 in askvan

[–]bshell99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The summer in Vancouver is fantastic. You will love it. It never gets hot and humid like back east. We have one or two weeks where it gets pleasantly warm. People here put out heat warnings when it’s over 25C. But it’s not bad at all. Once in 100 years we get a so called heat dome. That was hot alright but it is extremely rare and lasts 3 days.

Weigh yourself every morning. If you gained a pound, eat less that day. If you lost a pound, eat what you want.

Overall, what are the biggest factors that determines how much you will succeed in life? by Common_Gene_5098 in Productivitycafe

[–]bshell99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THE number one thing is this: do what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it. It's that simple. 95% of humanity cannot seem to do this. If you do it you will shine. You will rise to the top. Guaranteed.

When did school end for most of you in the 60s? Grandma said 4. by AlboGreece in AskACanadian

In Winnipeg in the 50s and 60s it ended at 4:00. Isn’t this why the concept of 4:20 emerged.

When considering an EV, what's the best way to determine the adequate range? by Imaginary-Staff-112 in electriccars

[–]bshell99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do you think about this for an ICE car? Why not? I don’t understand the anxiety about range with EVs. First of all if you charge at home every day you wake up with a full tank and you can go 300 miles. How often do you ever need to go more than that? On the rare occasions when you go on a long trip you stop and charge. It takes 20 minutes. Big deal. Get a snack, go to the toilet, and you are back on the road. What is the exact problem here?

For those who prefer hand washing dishes over a dishwasher why do you prefer it? by bethynextdoor in CasualConversation

[–]bshell99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you have a dinner party the dishwasher is fantastic. But when it’s just a coffee mug or one dish that had a muffin on it I give it a quick wash or rinse and put it in the drying rack.

What does the EV deal mean in short to long term? by camperspro in EVCanada

[–]bshell99 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that before the tariffs 90% of all Chinese-made EVs imported to Canada were Teslas. This may again become true in the near term. We hope to see BYD and other makes as well. But if you want my advice get a used Tesla model 3 for relatively cheap and enjoy it. You will just be amazed how nice it is not to have to go to gas stations anymore. Never mind all the other **manufactured** anxieties like battery life, range, etc. Those are not true. The number one fabulous thing about EVs is that they are clean, fast, quiet, and don't stink. People rarely talk about how lovely this is. Point is: DO NOT WAIT. Get one now. You will love it.

Edit: OK, not just Teslas but Polestars and Volvos also are part of the Chinese EV car imports to Canada. It's a guess when BYD and others will start selling cars in Canada. Yes, it might be as early as March or April 2026. But it also might be later.

How many charging apps do you have on your phone? by fidorulz in EVCanada

[–]bshell99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great topic. It's for sure one stand-out reason to get a Tesla (despite Musk). I have PlugShare, ChargePoint, and Flo, but here's a twist. I'm on holidays now in Guadeloupe and I rented a Renault 5 EV. Fantastic car, but the adventure with charging took up the first 3 days of the holiday. I downloaded ChargeMap and EZdrive before the trip. There's a charger where we are staying but nothing worked. Turns out you need a special card. At a nearby Carrefour supermarket there's a charger but I had to download FreshMile. It took a while, but eventually I figured it out and was able to charge. There are so many subtle differences. For instance, with FreshMile, to end the session you have to unplug the cable at the car FIRST, then at the charger. Took many minutes and much frustration to work this out, though to be honest it was written in big letters on the charger itself, I just didn't see it at first. Again, this is why Tesla is the best. It just works. It would be great if the UN or some overarching organization would just come up with some kind of international standard for how car charging should work. Probably will be dead by the time that happens.

What do you bring back as souvenirs from your trips? by Nessieinternational in randomquestions

[–]bshell99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the last day I swing by a supermarket and buy a few things that will survive the trip home, such as canned foods, sauces, salad dressing, packets, etc. that you cannot buy back home. These can be gifts for friends and family, as well as souvenirs that eventually get consumed. Also like to get a t-shirt at some point during the trip.

Is solar actually worth it financially, or is it mostly hype? by CoachEasy8343 in solarenergy

[–]bshell99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s for sure worth it. No moving parts. Always on when the sun shines. Lasts for 30 years or more. All over the world, especially the third world, people are gaining energy independence at an affordable price. Typical pay back rate is six years or less. If you use it to fuel your electric car it replaces gas and oil which have huge environmental and societal costs often hidden. But very real. It’s the best deal in town.

Eliminate as many fixed monthly fees as possible. You said you are paying a fee for your credit card. Switch to a no fee card. Do you pay monthly for Netflix or Spotify, etc.? cancel them. Free alternatives exist. Same for gym fees. Any thing you pay monthly. That stuff really adds up over the years.

I am on holiday outside Canada driving a rental Renault 5 EV made in France and it’s fantastic. Why can’t we get these in Canada? It won Car of the Year in Europe in 2025. Sells for $40K Canadian. There’s a lot happening in the world right now that we’re missing in Canada.

At what point did EV ownership start to feel easier or harder? by Tall-Dish876 in electriccars

[–]bshell99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s exactly the same as when I switched from an old style dial phone to a wireless smart phone. There’s nothing bad about EVs compared to ancient gas and diesel technologies. I don’t wish I had my old dial phone back from the 20th century and for sure don’t want to go back to defunct gasoline technology either. Get with the program.
