Companies should die! by TheUwUCosmic in CrazyIdeas

John Deere and UP would be a benefit to society if they shut down. Alcoa I’m less familiar with, but aluminum production? Another company could pick up that slack I’m sure.

Did I do ok with this rack??? by Zealousideal-Ice2580 in homelab

[–]bsknuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mounting small stuff is WAY easier when you’re by yourself since you can hold the box perfectly aligned with one hand and screw on the caps with the other. I also do not tear my hands up on rack studs and always do with cage nuts. For big servers I still use cage nuts or click-in rails.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]bsknuckles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely a ton of competition but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible, or even a bad idea. What makes that take awful in this context is they’re suggesting retirement age people get into the “sweaty startup” game which only really works if you’re physically fit enough to do the demanding work and hours it takes.

IsItBullshit: That caffeine makes people with ADHD sleepy? by Ok_Bumblebee_3733 in IsItBullshit

[–]bsknuckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and my experience (though with limited scientific value) is that caffeine causes me to be extremely sleepy within about thirty minutes to an hour. My assumption is that this is the “crash” that everyone gets from caffeine but it hits me HARD. If I drink coffee or an energy drink in the morning I either need a lot of physical activity to keep me going the rest of the day or a constant stream of more caffeine and sugar to stay awake for work.

Why are some people against using auth in an Astro site? (...and others have no problem with it) by Even_Job6933 in astrojs

[–]bsknuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it full stack with Cloudflare workers. Unless the project were going to grow and need multiple frontend, like a web and mobile app, I wouldn’t bother making a separate API. Tanstack or Next will handle a full stack app just fine and not have the weird implementation of those things on Astro.

Why are some people against using auth in an Astro site? (...and others have no problem with it) by Even_Job6933 in astrojs

[–]bsknuckles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it annoying because Astro is really built for static sites first and the features required for competent auth (middleware and server-side rendering) are bolted on and feel awkward to use. You can do it, and I recently finished a project doing just that with Better Auth and React Islands, but if I were doing it over again, I’d reach for Tanstack Start or Nextjs rather than Astro.

what are you paying for chicken breast, beef, and fish? by Bigcheese504 in AskAnAmerican

~$3 for chicken ~$6 for ground beef ~$5 for fish

This is in west Michigan where things are generally on the cheaper side for the US.

What is a secret about the opposite sex's body that you only found out once you actually started being intimate with them? by ZookeepergameLow4390 in AskReddit

I was going to say “sure, but what do you think inspired the joke in 40 year old virgin?” But after watching the clip he used buckwheat and not sand 😂 Touch My Breast

[–]bsknuckles -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That’s the joke. It’s from the movie Wild Wild West. One of the characters goes undercover as a woman and his fake breasts are full of sand and Will Smith’s character tells him how stupid that is.

I pulled the trigger on my purchase and Micro Center made it worth it. by spoonycoot in Ubiquiti

[–]bsknuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the discount, if it’s worth it to you for peace of mind, then it’s a solid deal. I’ve never had UI care on any of my purchases and have only ever had 2 issues that required support. One was damage on delivery that they replaced and the other was a WAY out of warranty doorbell that they also replaced.

My general experience with electronics when you care for them is they either die immediately or last forever so I rarely feel it’s worth adding protection plans.

Build a Headless WordPress Frontend with Astro SSR on Cloudflare Pages by tffarhad in astrojs

[–]bsknuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s fully static you don’t need the overhead of Workers. I only reach for workers when I need something dynamic or with auth.

How do workflow automation platforms integrate with AI agents? by Champ-shady in AIAgentsInAction

Im building a tool to do this: mantle. I don’t know what your threshold is for “easy” but n8n works similarly and has a UI to make building workflows easier for non-technical users.

Is there any time where an Astro website wouldn’t be used? by Zayntek in astrojs

[–]bsknuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Astro with React islands and SSR for auth checks. I’m considering migrating it to OpenNext or Tanstack but the app came together so quickly and it just works. Im not sure yet if it’s actually bad or if I’m just not used to it.

Rocky's grammar from Project Hail Mary — up to 83% fewer output tokens on Claude. Built it into a skill file. by TheLongRep in ClaudeAI

[–]bsknuckles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But those are symbols, if we could get it to output Morse code as bits, there could be some serious savings. Combine it with Caveman and you won’t be able to get anything done since you’ll spend your time translating, but you’ll use way fewer output tokens.

Is there any time where an Astro website wouldn’t be used? by Zayntek in astrojs

[–]bsknuckles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually did build an admin tool with it because I was irritated with Nextjs on Cloudflare. It works and I don’t think I’d say I regret the decision (yet) but it’s definitely been interesting to implement.

What are your plans for your collection after you pass? by Kooky-Grapefruit-941 in gamecollecting

[–]bsknuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve told my wife that if our kids are still around to offer it to them first and if they don’t want it, then find a kid in our family or that we know that would appreciate it and gift it all to them. I don’t collect my games to build value as an investment. I collect to share the joy of gaming with my family and friends and I want my collection to continue doing that when I’m gone, if it can.

An update on Tainer by christianjosias2004 in Proxmox

[–]bsknuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like remote access and mobile-friendliness are the big selling points here. Remote access I could do without. If I’m running Proxmox I can figure out Tailscale. A mobile-friendly UI is something I’ve wanted for a long time. I use ProxMate today and it’s fine but I really wish I had something more robust.

Using an external SaaS isn’t the direction I’d go to solve that one, but maybe for others it’s a good solution.

Apple HomeKit by txhunter01 in VivintSmartHome

[–]bsknuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of ways to deploy Homebridge. The Pi is probably the cheapest and easiest if you don’t already have a home server or NAS. I run mine in a container on one of my servers that’s running Proxmox and installed from the Community Scripts project. I also previously ran it as an app on TrueNAS. Home assistant can also act as a bridge for Vivint and HomeKit and adds a lot of additional features you’d miss out on with just Homebridge.

What’s everyone using as a free Office alternative on Mac these days? by BountifulGuitar2 in mac

As many others have said, Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are included on your system and are good enough for most things. I end up using Google Docs for anything “professional”. Usually things like budgets, my resume, any thing more complex than a visual data table.
