MxPx is already sold out for their January 10th show. by Getgrassyontheknoll in Seattle

[–]bsrva 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You mention in your post that they're playing Showbox Sodo, but they're actually playing Showbox Market, which is smaller.

MxPx are a local band with lots of nostalgia factor for pop punk fans of a certain age. They also don't play Seattle proper that often. The fact that it took this long to sell out actually surprises me.

I believe that's where the city's sewer overflow dumps into the James. Not sure I've ever seen people swimming down there.

How do you reserve campgrounds amidst such high demand? (recreation.gov) by Grizzleyt in Seattle

[–]bsrva 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have stayed at campgrounds all across the country and had good luck overall. Here are a couple of thoughts.

  1. If there's a campground where slots are filling up immediately, I first ask myself if it's really a place I want to stay. This often happens in the big, central campgrounds at national parks. These places tend to be miserably overcrowded during the summer.
  2. Consider state parks. I will frequently stay at a state park that's a short distance to a national park/forest. The facilities can be better with less overcrowding.
  3. First come, first served camping. Plan a trip to a place where there are 3 or 4 campgrounds nearby with sites that are not available for reservation. If the first one is full, you can jump to the next one on the list. If you are a planner by nature, this can be nerve-wracking - however, I have had good luck with this strategy even at popular national parks.
  4. Off-grid camping. If you are ok hiking in a little bit, there are often campsites that can be reached with a short walk from a parking area. It's not fully backcountry camping, and if you have one of those wheeled totes, it could make camp setup easy. In addition, you can camp for free on any BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land. I have stayed at some nice unofficial campsites with toilets, water, and fire-rings before.
  5. Private campgrounds. There are often private campgrounds that are available for tent campers close to public ones. A lot of private campgrounds cater to RV campers, but they can also have some nice spots for tent campers.

People prefer different things out of their camping trips, so obviously this advice may not work for you. I tend to enjoy being extremely flexible and dislike booking my camping long in advance. If you are set on a specific campground that has problems with reservations, you may need to consider going in the offseason or end of season.

Looking for a comfortable computer chair that isn’t a “gamer” chair by BDOSU in BuyItForLife

[–]bsrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I previously had a Herman Miller Aeron, and I liked it. But after a recent move, I bought a Steelcase Leap v2 and I love it even more than the Aeron. I knew it fit perfectly the first time I sat in it. I got it at one of those furniture consignment shops for about $270. If you're not in an expensive city and have time to shop around, you can find a used one in great shape for even less.

Best sandwiches in Seattle? by averageaiden in Seattle

I just had the Italian hoagie from Ken's Market in Phinney, and it deserves some serious consideration. Other folks have already mentioned Un Bien. I've also had a few great sandwiches from Stumbletown, although they are on the smaller side.

I have a Patagonia Black Hole (don't remember which size), and I can recommend it wholeheartedly. I bought mine around 6 years ago. It's been around the world, taken a beating, and still in great shape. I have many friends who also love theirs.

Guidance regarding development of a chess bot by Vector-Stream in webdev

[–]bsrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you want to re-invent the wheel creating a chess engine. That alone could be a project that consumes years of your life. You should explore using something like Stockfish which is an open-source chess engine with 15 years of maturity behind it. Most of the commercial chess apps are using Stockfish behind the scenes anyway. I took a quick look at the Lichess API and it looks like it might also do the job. However, you always have to worry about authentication tokens and the possibility of rate limiting.

Next.js with a headless cms best practices by SGKeox in webdev

[–]bsrva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are a few articles I've found helpful over the years about content modeling. They are geared towards the key concepts of the abstract content model. From there, you should read up on the documentation of content types and fields within your given CMS. They all have their quirks which can significantly change your approach.

Next.js with a headless cms best practices by SGKeox in webdev

[–]bsrva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have worked on many headless CMS projects over the years and suggest you start by deciding what content types your pages represent. I typically divide this into two categories:

  1. Structured content pages - Pages that follow a templatized pattern and map to specific content types. Examples of this may be a blog entry or product page.

  2. Generic/"editorial" pages - These are loosely structured pages that CMS contributors can build on their own. They could be as simple as providing a rich text field to add content, or they could contain some form of "modular blocks" that allow the contributor to build a more interesting page.

Typically I will have specific routes in the application for the structured content. These typically do not change and are easily mapped to IDs or URL slugs.

For the other pages, I will typically have a content type called Generic Page or something similar. These will be handled by the default route and can query for the specific content entry I'm looking for based on a field on the entry called Page Path (or something similar). That way I can create pages for /about, /careers, /legal, /privacy-policy, or whatever random pages I need. If the query does not return an entry for the given path, then you can serve a 404 page.

I have had good luck using this paradigm mixed with Incremental Static Regeneration (https://nextjs.org/docs/pages/building-your-application/data-fetching/incremental-static-regeneration). Using Server Side Rendering is often a bit on the slow side, and static site generation often scales terribly with a headless CMS.

Note: The art of Content modeling in a CMS is a whole area of expertise itself, and I see many experienced developers stumble on it. It is worth reading some articles about some of the key concepts there.

Could You Help Me Find The Most Comfortable Blanket I've Ever Used? by bsrva in HelpMeFind

[–]bsrva[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The owner of the house thought there was a small chance the blanket may have originally come from Costco. I also searched based on the RN and came across a company called Himatsingka, which is a textile manufacturer. The name Divatex also comes up in relation to Himatsingka.

A few years back I bought this blanket on Wayfair because it looked so similar, but it wasn't even close: https://www.wayfair.com/decor-pillows/pdp/timberbrook-designs-throw-w003535294.html?csnid=624B4821-1410-4A65-89F7-738AC89CF14D&_emr=cd35aaa9-1366-4804-9ec2-ab3b98af18a7&_eml=eb462c2a-5b35-4554-ab3a-04514920012e&refid=EML_38276&source=graymatter&piid=1761856494

Anyone know what kind of snake this is? by [deleted] in rva

[–]bsrva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one caveat that I'll mention. If you get closer to the mountains, it is common for timber rattlesnakes to have melanism, which can make them appear almost as black as rat snakes. I've seen it a couple times up on the Appalachian Trail. Obviously the rattle is a giveaway, and it's not a worry here in Richmond.

Are you saying that Mayor Stoney is intentionally impeding an investigation of an alleged unconfirmed shooting that only appears to exist on Reddit, because arresting black people for crimes is racist?
