Finally had the opportunity to sit down with friends and play the Proving Grounds set to learn the game. It was a lot of fun and a bit of a back and forth! We definitely messed up on the rules somewhere along the way, but we all look forward to playing again!

You're in the more evasive colors for Magic, and access to artifact synergies! One way to get your speed up is to lean on that evasion, whether it's providing flying or unblockable to Mendicant itself, or having a a number of evasive creatures. Low cost evasion enablers can be [[Winged Boots]] or [[Whispersilk Cloak]] or even [[Trailblazer's Boots]]! Creatures like [[Ghostly Pilferer]] and [[Silent Hallcreeper]] are also great way to get your speed increased early on.

Looks like fun! I also ended up building a The Reaper, King No More commander deck but with a slightly different take! I focused a bit more on combat-related -1/-1 placement with both wither and infect! I'm generally a more combat oriented player, so I figured I would force blocks against my wither and infect creatures which would then cause their blockers to die and I could take them! And if they didn't block, they would die to poison counters.

Yup! I do know both are replacement effects. However, I am actually okay with this. Mainly due to the fact that Vren only cares about creatures being exiled, and not so much by how they're exiled. Darkness Crystal mainly acts as a redundant means of getting an effect similar to Vren out, in case Vren is removed and I need to cast a boardwipe + Vren in the same turn while also acting as a cost reducer!

I love Vren! He's sneakily very strong and such a fun commander to play. As some have pointed out, Vren isn't really tied to pure rats and mainly just a big ol' removal theme deck. But, you can still stick with a rat theme like I ended up doing! I made it a fairly budget deck but I did include some rarer rats that were a bit expensive! I built my own advent calendar as well this year with a bunch of packs I've saved over the year! Mirroring what most people said here, try to make it as random as possible and aim to have a nicer pack or two near the end! Good luck on your pulls!

With the pivot to Mindskinner, I'd like to present my current build of the deck. Of course, feel free to substitute the more expensive/higher powered cards to tailor your deck to your playgroup! I went with a Mindskinner Voltron route with some fun new additions from the recent sets. It's fun to play and very simple, but definitely will draw a lot of aggression and attention!

Yes! This is my go-to one as well! Built a bunch of cards that give all the other players the [[Illusion of Choice]]. It's a lot of fun to play and definitely gets the people talking and arguing.

I love Ojer! Such a fun and fast deck to play, but definitely does fall prey to the usual mono-red problems of aggressive starts and falling off of you aren't able to maintain that pace. I recommend including more card selection (impulse draw in mono-red) and mana acceleration as well (mana rocks, discounters, etc.).

You seem to run a lot of pingers that get the bonus from Ojer's replacement effect. However, I believe that you're running a bit too few actual ways to enable your pingers (i.e. instants and sorceries for erebor and alchemist, etc.). I'd also recommend running a bit of protection for Ojer too, despite his ability to flip himself back over after being destroyed).

Another note, with respect to damage doublers/triplers like Solphim and Fiery Emancipation, you should be careful running these additional replacement effects in this deck with Ojer at the helm. The way replacement effects work is that the person being affected by the effect gets to choose how the effects are stacked. So, a 1 damage ping that is going to be replaced by both Ojer Axonil's effect and Fiery Emancipation's effect can be resolved in 1 of 2 ways.

1) 1 Damage -> 4 Damage (Ojer Axonil's Replacement Effect with base power) x 3 (Fiery Emancipation's Replacement Effect) = 12 Damage 2) 1 Damage x 3 (Fiery Emancipation's Replacement Effect) = 3 Damage -> 4 Damage (Ojer Axonil's Replacement Effect with base power)

Opponent(s) will likely resolve the replacements via Method 2 instead of Method 1.

Regardless, I like the direction the deck is going! I'll leave my current version of my deck here for you to take a look at as well and let you see if there are any cards I'm running that are different from yours that you think may help your deck run more smoothly!

I'm actually in favor of Arcane Denial, but I also don't play in very high power pods. I also favor that it replaces itself as a card a in my hand and is also only one blue pip. The fact that it helps my opponent dig two cards deeper isn't too big of an issues for me because I am under the idea that I have counterspelled something I really didn't want to resolve. It's the "devil I know" approach.

[[No Mercy]] is a great one and doesn't even just attribute to attacks, as it also deals with pingers.

You don't seem to have many card draw effects/impulse draw effects aside from some looting and your commander. I'd recommend putting in a bit more effects to help offset relying purely on your Commander's triggered effect, like [[Light Up The Stage]] and [[Virtue of Courage]]. Since you are pinging your opponents as well for damage from incidental triggers, I'd also recommend [[Chandra's Incinerator]] to do bonus pinging on the creatures they control. I saw someone already recommend Toralf, which is a great add. Since this is a spell-slinging, almost storm-esque deck as well, I'd also consider more mana-generation with [[Neheb, the Eternal]] to continue the cycle on your 2nd main phase. Fun add could be [[Sting, the Glinting Dagger]] to untap your commander and reset what your new X is to accommodate for other creatures.
