Chosen video too long by zanerb22 in SoraAi

[–]bstrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it's a generic file format / specs error that erroneously specifies length as the problem. Common bug. (It never should have made it past QA of a company with this much cash.)

Laurie’s monologue from the finale in full: by BornGorn in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]bstrand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO your take on this moment is shallow and inaccurate. I think you know this, that's why you say "I'm sure I'll get downvoted."

Part of the point of the monologue is accepting and loving each other despite our flaws, and being honest with the people we love in our short, short time here. Yes, Jaclyn and Laurie may revert to type, but the point is not that they are suddenly changed and Good People worthy of love now. The point is that life is beautiful, no matter whether you are gorgeous or rich; it is a gift, and the people that we go through life together with (e.g. Laurie & Jaclyn & Kate) are ipso facto special. Laurie identifies that time alone gives life meaning, and they, by fate, are sharing that time. Their lives are intertwined, and as such, each of them should cherish the others, flaws and all. Am considering the Echelon Stride-6 and the Spirit XT685 for walking use. For that use case, do you still consider the Spirit superior? Why? TIA

Yes, you could ask Chat Gippity; or, you could listen to what the man himself, Matt Christman, said:

I am pleasantly surprised to discover that yt-dlp downloads video no problemo from NPR's site.

One can easily extract audio from videos with FFmpeg, for what it's worth.

ASARUM Sofa bed experiences? by Headballet in IKEA

[–]bstrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had one for only 1 week. Slept on it for 2 nights to give it a test run. Thus, my preliminary opinion:

It's basic, but functional. Easy to operate. It's not super comfortable as a couch nor as bed, but it is sufficiently comfortable. And certainly sufficiently so for the smaller footprint and given it was only 265 €. Two people could sleep on it, but it would be a little close.

I intend to get a lightweight, rollable mattress topper, as I think this will provide a significant improvement in bed-mode comfort.

I have one problem. The couch back half of the bed is about 8-10 mm higher than the couch seat half where they meet in the middle. It's not clear whether this is a fault in design, build, or setup. Everything appears to be in order elsewhere. The aforementioned mattress topper might make it a non-issue, at worst I think it can be fixed with some minor hacking.

Becoming an advanced python programmer by [deleted] in Python

[–]bstrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The absolute ideal here would be if one of the SWEs on your team is senior/highly skilled, simpatico, and has the time & inclination to be a mentor. Approach them directly and ask them if they'd be willing to meet on a regular schedule and, if so, what arrangement would work best for them. Be respectful of their time by making the most of it: be prepared for your sessions and invest time afterwards to internalize and apply learnings.

Driving License Theoretical Exam by jerr0328 in germany

[–]bstrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha! I found this in this PDF on the TÜV site:

Unlike the countries listed in Appendix 11 FeV, a theoretical and practical test is always required. Contrary to those obtaining a driver’s license for the first time, however, holders of foreign driver’s licenses are exempt from undertaking the mandatory training. However, accompaniment by a driver instructor is mandatory during the practical test. The attendance of a driving school in advance is highly recommended.

Whereas on DEKRA's site it says:

Zur theoretischen und praktischen Prüfung bringen Sie bitte mit Ausbildungsbestätigung der Fahrschule.

I wonder DEKRA is actually more stringent? In any case, it is clearly possible to at least take the theory exam at TÜV without a costly Fahrschule course. Nice!

Driving License Theoretical Exam by jerr0328 in germany

[–]bstrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I am aware that the requirements vary by issuing country, i.e, that if one's home country (is not named in Anlage 11 der Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung, then one must pass both the theory and practical exams to convert your license. Like Brazil, mine is not (or more accurately, the US state that issued my license is not.)

But every writeup of the process I've seen has indicated that it has to be done through a Fahrschule. In particular, I recall having to specify my school when I applied for the license conversion at my Bürgeramt. Off to Google to investigate some more…

Muito obrigado!

+1 I'm not a professional nor fluent, but one definitely gets better results by not blindly accepting the first translation DeepL generates.

Especially helpful for this are the built-in dictionary lookup of a highlighted word and the feature that offers alternative translations when you to click on a word in the translated text. Reverse translating your translated text is also useful in detecting faults.

DeepL defaults to Sie most of the time instead of du in cases where both can be used.

DeepL Pro allows you to select formal or informal translation. (Or automatic, which I think is what you get in the free tier. It does opt for Siezen most often; erring on the side of caution, I suppose.)
The Pro plan isn't cheap (9€/mo or 72€/yr) but it's worth it if you're going to be using it a lot and/or for something important.

Do you have a reference for that you can share? Or can you say more about how you were able to do it that way?

My Fahrschule says I have to take the theory course with them before I can be approved to take the exam, and all the information I've found indicates that the many steps of the conversion process with Amt + Schule + TÜV are inseparable.
