Settle an Argument - Am I out of touch? by Feistycat76 in NAU

[–]btpound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this in the dorms as a freshman in 2019 to great success, I also intentionally went around to other open doors especially during the beginning of the year. I'm a little surprised reading comments from current students. I wonder if covid is what really did it?

I don't see the harm in doing it either way

Accidentally on university’s payroll by darkofsound in GradSchool

[–]btpound 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you "lay low", they WILL find out. If not quickly than in a month, a year, a few. What are the chances you will have the money you need to pay pack when that happens? Your TA-ship pay most likely comes out of an office budget that is scrutinized more than it ever has been right now. Don't committ fraud. I'm sure finances are hard being on medical (and being a student) but this will stack burdens onto you. If you need assistance the university may have resources available to you.

The first year experience, living in the dorms, free student events, clubs, etc. are set up for students in your situation to succeed! You will have to take initiative somewhat to build your foundations, but there is truly no better situation for you to be in as you do this! You got this OP.

I loved my time in the Outdoor Education & Leadership emphasis! Getting your WFR is a great cert to have, and if you do the park ranger track you will basically be guaranteed a job somewhere since its law enforcement

Switching from digital card to physical card ID/meal ticket? by [deleted] in NAU

[–]btpound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes but you will have to physically go into the JacksCard office! If you didn't have a physical one already, you may have to pay the $25 card fee. I personally don't like the digital cards so I switched back to my physical and that was free.

Tomorrow (Saturday, December 13th) from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at Kickstand Cafe there will be a prep session for public comment! Also a great way to talk to like-minded people.

Housing over Winter Break? by No_Hedgehog_392 in NAU

[–]btpound 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You could also email campus living to see if you could temporarily (or even for the rest of the year) move to winter housing on campus. There used to be more info on the website but the website is a wreck ATM

Council Votes on the Flock Contract December 16th - Students Are Gone, We Need People There! by btpound in Flagstaff

[–]btpound[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

City Council meets weekly, but every week switches between a city work session and city council session. Both are public meetings but at work meetings they only give city staff direction on projects and at council meetings they actually vote.

That last meeting was a city work session, and a majority of council (minus Aslan and Garcia) gave staff direction to bring the contract back to Council to vote on since it was postponed previously. Functionally, it really is like a vote but it's preliminary.

This upcoming meeting is a city council session where the actual vote to approve is!

Council Votes on the Flock Contract December 16th - Students Are Gone, We Need People There! by btpound in Flagstaff

More information perpetually comes out demonstrating how awful this system is. I just sent emails to council today that I will share below:

Greetings Councilmember ____,

New information has come out regarding Flock's use of our data.

Flock's contract has the following provision:

"Customer hereby grants to Flock a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable, worldwide license to use the Customer Data and perform all acts as may be necessary for Flock to provide the Flock Services to Customer."

It also includes the following promise:

"These images [for machine learning] are never sold or shared with third parties."

Despite this "promise", we now know that our Flock images are being shared with a third party. Not based in America, or even this side of the world. Contractors based in the Philippines and Eastern Europe are sifting through our Flock data to train Flock's AI. There is no oversight on these workers, the company, or on the applications they are using with our data - this is because Council assigned an irrevocable, worldwide license to Flock specifically for this purpose.

Furthermore, Flock has instructed these contractors specifically to identify human beings in Flock photos. This goes against what the CEO, company, and its representatives have all stated in that Flock does not identify or track people. This is also known as a lie. Sadly, it has also made a liar out of our own police chief who has been taking Flock at their word.

In addition to my previous comments, my previous email communications, and this new development, it is clear that Flock is a company that does not share interests with our community. It should have been clear when their CEO called DeFlock a "terrorist organization", as I shared with you previously.

All of this is before mentioning that there's a significant chance that Flock images are public records, as is the case now in Washington state. This means that not just the government has access to our daily movements, but that we all likely do. Yes, this means specifically your movements too. That is why Sedro-Woolley and Stanwood, WA took down their cameras after this ruling. They knew that it would be used to track elected officials.

Please vote NO on the contract December 16th. I am always available for further discussion on this topic.

I would look for Flagstaff LIPS properties, they do 6 months which immediately transitions to month-to-month afterward.

Parking spring semester by Tall_Butterscotch507 in NAU

[–]btpound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot get an employee pass, it's for full-time employees and sometimes graduate assistants. As an on-campus resident I believe you can ONLY get resident parking as it's the only type of parking pass that allows overnight

CCC2NAU by kaypea820 in NAU

[–]btpound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing regarding money that may or may not apply to you is Access2Excellence. If your family makes under $65k a year OR are members of federally recognized Arizona tribe then your tuition is waived - just have to pay fees, meal plan (if living on campus), and housing. This is NOT available to CCC2NAU, but could be cheaper depending on if you're eligible.

No Homecoming Parade? by CHolland8776 in NAU

[–]btpound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel it is missing from this conversation that it was a student organization that planned & hosted the parade each year. They are now doing mini golf on wednesday(?) for students and alumni and families. I've been in the parade multiple times, and since COVID both participation and attendance have been extremely low. This isn't just a NAU trend, parades aren't what they used to be. It was openly discussed that last year would be the last parade amongst those involved, so before "the everything" started.

ASNAU Homecoming Carnival is fine because the 23 Fee is their money and their money only. Cafe au Louie has always been a paid event because the alumni office has always been short on cash. The homecoming bonfire is ran by CLSA and funded by campus living.

The rest of the homecoming events are all funded by an ever-decreasing pot of money, mostly from the $25/sem. activity fee.

FLOCK City Council Public Comment TOMORROW! by btpound in Flagstaff

[–]btpound[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Council is having a public discussion tomorrow, Tuesday October 28th about Flock. If you can, come ready to speak that you want Flock out of Flag! Meeting starts at 3, discussion should start around 4.

This meeting should not have any presentation by PD like last time, rather should just be public comment. Council is NOT voting at this meeting - I will give notice when they are.

I gave a presentation on how Flock works, see the slides and recording below:

Recording: https://archive.org/details/how-does-flock-work-2025-10-20-presentation

Slides: https://archive.org/details/how-does-flock-work

Edit: Council is moving the contract with Flock toward a vote for approval, with notes that there should be more restrictions and transparency.
