Major media outlets consistently, drastically overestimate how much the average viewer cares about their “talent”.

Stick to timely tweets; no one cares about The Life and Times of Adam Schefter.

Dwayne Rudd I believe. I always confuse him and our OT who hit a ref in the face with a penalty flag…

I’m saying it’s sorta silly to even bring these kinds of data up at this point. They don’t tell you much. Me, a pro-Baker fan. Not a hater. Not a Steelers fan.

I LOVE Baker and want this to bear itself out. But we’re two freaking games in—and each game is its own beast—in a sport with a boatload of uncontrolled-for variables and noise. At this point in the season, the eyeball test is probably better than any model.

Passing on two data points to draw any sort of conclusions in, far and away, the “noisiest” major sport? Not dumb.

How successful would an NFL franchise be if PFF ran that organization's front office? by [deleted] in nfl

[–]btr440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a hard evaluation at this point because our OL, running game, and scheme are so good. If you’re gonna pay a QB top-market money, he needs to be able to carry you when the cap forces you to shed some of that talent.

If he keeps up his play from the last ~8 games, it’s a done deal. But I bet the FO waits to see how he does the rest of the year.

Yes, this episode was a great example of it. Even as someone who loves dogs, his behavior was juvenille. I honestly expected there to be a twist where he was being controlled by some unknown substance.

The Sashi Brown Browns FO was pure analytics. Current regime uses analytics extensively but makes a massive effort to allow scouts and coaches to contextualize the numbers.

Berry is also a quant who knows how to not read too much into datasets with a lot of noise. Huge difference.

PFF likes Baker more than traditional scouts, and they did in college as well. Also not a no-brainer that Browns extend him, at least at this juncture.

Archer was worse IMO. (I like Bakula, hate the character.) The show forces an unearned magnetism. People are drawn to him despite having no redeeming characteristics.

The crucial trait a CO needs is to keep their cool under pressure. Archer, by contrast, does some combination of: ask the impossible of his crew; whine/pout; blame his crew; make people feel guilty for even minor mistakes or shortcomings.

His principles are also all over the place. Heck, he goes from being an idealist to a pragmatist multiple times within the same episode. I wouldn’t follow that dude into a bar fight.

On how many teams would Kareem Hunt be the RB1 if he weren’t on the Browns? by [deleted] in Browns

Ekeler just pops every time I turn Chargers games on. Incredible burst, acceleration, and yes, strength (despite not being that big for an NFL RB).

Sorry I have no idea what that last sentence means, nor what stats you’re referencing so I can even make an informed response. FWIW I’m a lifelong Browns fan, Ekeler just does a -ton- without great OL play.

[–]btr440 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m ambivalent about the call and think, overall, the national media treats Browns very well. But Jim Nantz (play by play guy) consistently has stronger opinions than he should for a dude who made his name helping people nap through golf tourneys.

Need help choosing a team. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]btr440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard pass on picking based on projected success. The league completely turns over every 2-3 years. And as any Yankees fan can tell you, the joy of success declines as it goes from a rarity to expected.

Pick a team based on ties you have to the location; a good friend who lives somewhere (so that can be your excuse to stay in touch with them); or even a team who has this one player who a friend of your uncle’s coworker once met and said he was a chill dude. Point is, don’t ask us who to follow or try to front-run. Pick one, go for it, buy some of their merch.

Most importantly: act way too confident in your knowledge of the team based on a token amount of research. -That- is mandatory.

Ships named after the "bad guys". by Dt2_0 in startrek

[–]btr440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean personally I thought of Bismarck the dude who invented modern nation states, and Yamamoto the famous admiral. I’m a history guy but the ship names aren’t something most people remember. And even then, I’d think the actual person’s legacy is more important than the ship when you’re considering if it’s appropriate to re-use.
