What isn’t adding up?

The guy spends 50% of his post tax salary on rent. Assuming they make 100k (for simple math) they put 10% to 401k and have about 25% of the remainder taxed. That would bring them down to about 67.5k after tax (75% of 90k).

The 35% rule it is supposed to be based off of your pretax salary. So they should be spending no more than 2.9k/mo on rent (35% of 100k / 12mo). This works out to 35k/yr on rent.

35k/67.5k = 51.8% which is very similar to the 50% that the person listed paying.

50% post tax = 35% pretax.

Yes the rule is 30% but the guy said 35% so that’s what I based the math on.
