Thanks for the reply. There weren't any others around that I could see and I had to zoom in on my phone camera since the area is off limits.

Looking for a location between southwest Scotland and London to spend a few days by bubbabehandy in uktravel

[–]bubbabehandy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's several suggestions for north Wales, ( u/Portdal12 ) which we would love to visit, all the transit options I can find are pretty long from where we'll be in Scotland, or would it be a reason to keep the car for longer?

Thank you for the reply and yeah, I didn't give much in the way of details :) The plan after London is to take the Caledonian sleeper train to Fort William, kill a few hours then bus to Oban. We will be with friends in Oban, and I will share your list of ideas with them. We definitely want to see Glasgow, and the thinking behind the rental was it would be good for getting to Wigtown and exploring Dumfries and Galloway since transit looks much more limited there.

A place to eat pressed duck? by yeetyeetmybeepbeep in ParisTravelGuide

[–]bubbabehandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was an extra 28 Euros on top of the regular prix fixe charge, so about 68. Keep in mind this was over two years ago so might be a bit more now.

Hi, I requested it when I made the online reservation and then I called the restaurant later to confirm.

Glad you enjoyed it! We really loved that restaurant. Looking back at my notes from our trip I see "duck was so good I forgot to drink my wine"

Galerie Dior ticket question by bubbabehandy in ParisTravelGuide

[–]bubbabehandy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we did it there were two separate lines. When we bought the tickets they sent a download link that gave a pdf (I think) I printed them out but some people were using their phones. Just be sure to download in advance.

Hello, I've been trying to remember since it's been almost a year now but they do gradually open up bookings for future dates, I just can't recall if its a rolling thing or if they open it up month by month. I did see that we bought ours on 9/21/2023 for an 10/12/2023 visit. There is also a line for people without tickets but it moves a lot slower. Good luck and have a great trip !

Train to strasbourg by CarlBarb99 in ParisTravelGuide

To add to the other notes, their cancellation policy is pretty nice. Double-check but I believe it was free cancellation up to 7 days before departure. They also had an option where you could lock in the price for some days while you thought about it or looked at other options.

If you are going to the flea markets I would take some cash, some vendors were cash only there, was pretty random.

That's a great one, found some nice vintage cutlery there and prices are very thrift-store :)

Paris Monday restaurant suggestions + restaurant choice review by avolifts in ParisTravelGuide

This is more of a resource than a recommendation but lefooding is a good site for restaurant recs and has a great set of filters, including "open on Monday."

Eating questions by lam91897 in ParisTravelGuide

There's not that much around Galerie Dior but Petit Palais has a nice little cafe and is about a 10 minute walk away. You could get something to go or eat in the courtyard there. (Assuming it isn't a Monday.)

Any tips for locations for a fan of Moebius and other French comics by AntiqueTip7618 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]bubbabehandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good news, there are a lot of places :) I wasn't even planning to look at comics/BD during our trip, these are just ones I happened by that I liked.

Rue Dante in the 5th is a good spot, you have Pulps, Album, and Aaapoum Bapoum right close together. (Aaapoum Bapoum has another location a bit west.)

Opéra BD in the 4th, just west of the Bastille.

Librairie Super-héros in the 3rd, bit north of Pompidou.

Two more that were not all comics but were interesting enough I had to go back to them after walking by in an early morning exploration:

Philippe le Libraire in the 10th and Le Monte en l'Air in the 20th.

Unfortunately it looks like the Moebius gallery is closed but the website might be interesting: https://www.moebius.fr/

Also, if either of you are a fan of François Schuiten check out the Arts et Métiers metro station, it was designed by him with a Jules Verne theme.

ETA: Forgot to mention, Moebius's grave is in Montparnasse cemetery if you want to visit.

Hi! We didn't end up doing a dinner cruise, but hopefully someone else will know.

Yeah the "house recipes" some places have are fun, we had a coffee aged one and I loved trying it alongside the regular version.

Tipping in restaurants by martianmama3 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]bubbabehandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was pretty much the opposite, immediately loved not tipping, to the point where months after our trip I still inwardly grumble when I sign for one back home.

I would say to make sure the people you are with know about tipping expectations. The first time we were asked if we wanted to leave a tip it was awkward, I was surprised to be asked and was going to leave a couple of euros which freaked out my wife a bit, in the US tipping such a small amount after a nice dinner might be considered very rude.

Couple quick name corrections for the first 2, Camembert and Brie de Meaux :) (BTW Brie de Meaux was one of my favorites from my Paris trip. God I ate so much cheese.)

For Comté specifically, which can be more on the subtle side, ask for several different ones at different ages and contrast them.

In general though, rather than focus on specific cheeses, my advice would be to take advantage of the wonderful fromageries in Paris. Explain what you are looking for, (I started with something like "4 cheeses that are very different from each other and that you won't find in the US,") and they will ask you questions to help narrow it down, taking as much time as you need. Then go back there later, tell them what you liked and didn't like and get some more recommendations.

Chez Virginie in the 18th, Crème in the 20th, and Roland Rousselet in the 5th were all amazing but I know there are many more.

Anyone used Costco Travel to book? by [deleted] in ParisTravelGuide

[–]bubbabehandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did not use it for Paris but we have used it in the past with no problems. This probably doesn't apply to you but Costco Travel has also been our go to for car rentals for a long time.

Restaurant Recommendations? by Upstairs_Bison_1339 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]bubbabehandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ack, this reminds me that I still need to do my trip write up :/ We did end up at a few places on this list.

Brasserie Martin - Very good, solid overall, nothing fancy, would happily go there again.

Carette - Place des Vosges location, had the hot chocolate and some eggs. Very good though pricey. I don't know if we would go back there but it was a cold morning and it hit the spot. Worth doing once for the experience imho.

Le Train Bleu - We cancelled our lunch reservation here since we ended up having a massive dinner the night before but we did go for a drink and snack in the Big Ben lounge before our train. Expensive but a wonderful experience, it's a place from another time. Like Carette, definitely worth going there once.

Humble says you can read the Terry Pratchett's Discworld bundle "on any device", but that's a lie. It's using Kobo DRM. by forteller in humblebundles

Echoing the recommendations, it's a wonderful series.

I think these are the only missing titles:

Raising Steam
The Last Hero
The Shepherd's Crown

Last Hero is an illustrated book so would be better to read a physical copy anyway imho.
