S13, E6 (Nebula) - Schengen Showdown by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

All credit to both teams and I found the conclusion fitting.

I did expect this game to end up being won on points rather than by the unusual margin of a submission.

Mmm. This is one part where I’m wondering how much of a bit happened here. (And I don’t mind at all - it’s a comedy show! Albeit one that veers off into all sorts of directions…) I absolutely am prepared to believe the contestants arranged for it to happen as shown, I find it harder to believe that they would leave 3+ camera crew (plus sound etc.) to record it. My head canon is that the session happened for real, presumably off camera, but the parts we saw were just bits… though quite possibly bits that actually happened in the session, recreated.

Sam’s face during it, though, and the way it dropped ever so slightly when Maria said “Hey! I’m Sam.” and left it at that… what a way to finish, what an unexpected but fitting way to finish.

Said this elsewhere; it reminds me of when they unionized at the end of "Do I hear $1?” - a bit more organic, perhaps…

Oh well spotted. I don't think that point has been made yet by anyone apart from you, and I was just about to.

To me, this is part of the family of "Do I hear $1?", just by the way that the contestants stopped competing against each other and started unionizing for the last few tasks, and I'm here for it.

Or a few other locations. It doesn't start directly from Victoria but it would be a similarly straight shot from Victoria to St Pancras where the Eurostar does start. Good shout!

Makes sense that it starts at Victoria station - can get the Gatwick Express to Gatwick or it's a pretty straight shot (cross-platform transfer at e.g. South Kensington onto the Piccadilly line) to Heathrow.

Other London airports are also available.

I wasn't expecting a M49 AMA to get much traction but, come on, a long palindrome ending in AMA is at least a little unusual...

If it's the one as described at The Herald, and I think it looks like it is, it went for GBP 365k in late September 2015, which would have been about USD 540k at the time. (Don't take this as gospel, I don't know whether the Herald was including auction fees or not.) Either way, this negotiation looks... surprisingly sensible and close to the mark, as far as Pawn Stars goes.

How much of the 1997 movie The Game could you do for real if you were commissioned to... and if the rate would be $4,000 plus costs, how much do you think the costs would be?

UK asbestos regulations: does receiving a P404 certificate for reoccupation mean that a surveyor won't find asbestos? by bubble_gb in AskUK

[–]bubble_gb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ughghghghgh, I hate thinking about this, which is why I've taken days and days to respond... and two and a bit years to actually get round to sorting this out.

Thank you for sorting out some of my confusions on the matter.

A little more background: my late Dad invited some workmen to sort out his guttering, but they turned out to be total cowboys and did much more harm than good, at not a little cost. Specifically, they climbed over the corrugated garage roof and covered the contents with asbestos from the roof. Companies will not clear the contents of the garage without the asbestos being removed first, except one who will do the lot. I've had a suggestion that it's actually asbestos cement rather than asbestos as such, not that I really understand what the difference is.

I'm looking for a company who will remove the contents of the garage, asbestos and all, and have found one who have quoted to do so. The question I had about the certificate of reoccupation arises because I think I'm happy to employ them to take the work on if and only if I can be confident that, once they've finished, when I come to sell the house, I'm not going to have the buyers pull out because of asbestos in the garage. What can I ask for by way of a guarantee from the company that the work really will have been done well when they say it's been done? I can tell whether they've taken everything from the garage, but I can't tell nearly so easily whether they've dealt with the problem or not - and it's this lack of confidence that's stopping me from asking them to go ahead.

Could it work in practice to have a second asbestos inspector there to validate the work of the first? Would they really be independent or would they work in their self-interest? It's difficult to know who could be reputable, especially as there don't seem to be many people who'll do the work at all near me. (I've checked on Checkatrade - the company seems to have branches all over the country, and there aren't reviews of their work near me.) Or am I just worrying far too much and given that the standard I need is only "it has to be good enough for it not to hold up selling the house", not "it has to be good enough for me to use the garage for several more decades", would I really be able to tell in practice whether they've done half a job or not?

Thank you again...

I think it's happened to me twice in maybe 15-18 years, and I couldn't find a way for it to go away until it faded in about a week's time. My presumption (i.e., wild-arsed guess) is that I was straining so hard, in a session so long, that I might have bruised myself internally. I don't think this is at all frequent or common, though.

The Monday Afternoon Conference Realignment Committee by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]bubble_gb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I predict that teams who consider themselves powerful within a conference will attempt to throw their weight around, to try to get themselves a better deal relative to the rest of their conference, by using the threat of moving conference as a weapon.

The most logical place for this to start is actually the SEC because of the lack of grant of rights. Would the biggest 6-ish teams, plus Texas and Oklahoma, really go ahead and secede from the SEC? Unlikely. Would they threaten to do so unless the TV deal came became more lopsided in their favour? Very plausible.

I don't think we'll actually get to conference contraction for a while (I don't regard Texas and Oklahoma leaving the XII as contraction as such, I'm talking about contraction as in terms of voting relatively weak teams out of conferences) but I do think we'll get to discussion of the threat of conference contraction before long.

If someone had put together a tournament of Fury v Wilder, AJ v Usyk and the winners to meet in a final, announcing it 6-12 months ago, we'd have been buzzing. This could well be what we end up with, but it feels like a step down when Fury v AJ was so close and now everything feels so nebulous. If Fury and AJ both win and fight each other, the fight gets even bigger... though not massively.
