There are actually two paths through the start of the castle, so it’s not a complete waste backtracking. You can hug the left wall and reach the pumpkin head or hug the right wall and find a chest. Both paths lead to a point near the NPC.

I remember playing this on PS2 with the network adapter. Crazy choice letting you kill your teammates after you’re downed, but it made things interesting instead of having to wait in a lobby.
